    Speaker boxes/cabinets

Hi I am going to make new boxes for a pair of hifi speakers, to make them a little more interesting and in line with my decor (rather than their current faux black ash). My question is this - the woofer is normally (always?) at the bottom, with tweeter above. Is this simply because it's...

Pic needed - Erbauer ERB238MSW mitre saw

Hi, I removed the blade guard return spring in order to source a replacement, and in the meantime managed to delete the pics I took showing it in place. Does anyone on here have this model, or a similar Erbauer saw? If so, could you please post a pic showing the guard return spring in place...

    SCMS began when?

Hiya As pe r the title, when did SCMS become "a thing"? They appear to be fairly recent, with radial arm saws preceeding them. Was there a brand that kick-started them (like Skil with the skil saw)? I have upgraded to vintage machines for most of my tools, but it seems like this isn;t really...

Myford ML1 (i think!) assembly questions

Hiya, and I hope you are all having a good 2023 so far. I picked up a small myford metal lathe, advertised as "for restoration". However, everything feels tight where it should, and moves where you'd want it to. So far the only thing I can see broken it the lock-down handle to stop/release the...

making drill chuck adapter - is brass a dumb idea?

Hi, and happy new year As per another thread, I recently bought a multico K1 morticer, which normally uses different-sized adapters to hold the auger shank via a grub screw. It only came with one such adapter, and I was unable to find any more online. I found an adapter to fit the 5/8 motor...

    Multico k1 collets?

Hello all. I have just upgraded to a multico k1 morticer, and I am very pleased with it. However, it only came with one chisel. I understand collets are needed to adjust for the shank diameter (apologies if any terminology is incorrect). Are these available for purchase anywhere? I have...

    Record 52 1/2 quick-release issue

Apologies if this should be elsewhere, but my vice is being annoying. It clamps up fine, but when you then try to unwind it, the mechanism just "clacks", and I have to depress the quick-release and force it open. I already dismantled it and cleaned out the tons of gunk fouling the threads on...

    Clear epoxy/resin for jewelry

Hi I am going to make an amulet/pendant-y thing for a birthday present. The idea is to inset something in to a wooden backing, and then fill with resin to protect it. I have used 2-part epoxy umpteen times, but this dries slightly yellowish, and I need a product that will be clear. Can anyone...

Retro-fit DAB car stereo - aerial recommendations? Ones to avoid?

Hi, as per the title I have bought a DAB+ stereo for the truck, so need to now get a DAB aerial. I see lots of "stick to the glass" types advertised, but would prefer to avoid this. Has anyone used an aerial that bolts to the front wing like wot cars used to have in the olden days? And if so...

    Mystery lazy riveter

Hi I recently purchased a lazy riveter from Ebay, which has no manufacturers' mark. I'm not bothered by this, just mildly curious. It's very nicely made - the body is brass, and the handle is alloy. It has "MF4/14815" stamped, but no other identifying marks. Being as well-made as it is, I'm...

    Forza Segoni-Smith bandsaw

Hi, and merry Christmas to you all. I just picked up a vintage Forza Segoni-Smith bandsaw. Not sure of its age - from the styling I'd guess anywhere from '50s to' 70s. I've had a google, but can't find any info (although I did find Forza bandsaw blades for sale in rolls). Can anyone share any...

    Air vent in larder/pantry?

Hiya I am going to build a floor-to-ceiling cupboard in the corner of the kitchen, approximately 10.5 square feet. It will have the washing machine at the bottom, and shelves above for tinned goods etc. Not sure if this makes it a larder, pantry or neither. Anywho, that's by-the-by. My query...

engine enamel / very high temperature paint

Apologies if this should be in the finishing section, but it isn't for woodwork... can anyone recommend any brands, or flag any to be avoided? I'm after brush-on stuff, rather than aerosol. And what temperatures can "normal" enamels withstand? I am going to paint (the outside only!) some...

Wide "secret" drawer in Victorian chest of drawers

I wasn't sure what forum to post in, as it's woodwork related, but something I bought rather than made. I picked up what I believe is a Victorian veneered chest of drawers from Facebook marketplace for the outrageous sum of £50 quid. The top drawer - which isn't obviously a drawer at first...

Couple of decorating Qs: old rad pipes, and filling plasterboard

Hi all, Calling on help from the UKW brain trust... I have moved several radiators, which has left large-ish holes in the ceiling where the old pipes used to run. Any tips on product for filling these? Holes are approx. 3" by 1.5", so a bit too big to just splurge caulk. Also, the next rad to...

Coronet Major/Minor table saw attachments - accurate?

Hi I have a Coronet Major, and was wondering how good/accurate the table saw attachment is? Is the fence reliably accurate? I know these have lack a guard underneath, but that could be addressed, if the saw is worth bothering with. Are they any better than the average DIY-grade table saw...

    bench grinder wheels

Screwfix and Toolstation don't appear to sell replacement wheels for bench grinders. This seems surprising - am I being dense and using the wrong search term? I need 125mm with 20mm bore. Thanks

Pilot hole size for M5 coach screw?

Hi Is there a rule of thumb for coach screw pilot holes? I've not used them before, and will be putting them in to well-seasoned oak. I have drilled umpteen pilot holes for regular screws, but these aren't as sharp as "normal" screws. Thanks

    Kerry Super Eight

Hi I have just acquired a Kerry Super 8 (mk1, I think). The pulley cover is missing, and I think someone's retro-fitted a replacement motor (the latter probably being the reason for the former), but it's a sturdy bit of kit, and I am pleased. There's no bolt where the column fits in to the...

wolf sapphire 6089 circular saw - spindle lock?

Hi I just picked up a Wolf 6089 - can anyone advise how to lock the spindle in order to replace the blade? I have done this on several saws and the spindle lock was always obvious, but I don't see anything on the Wolf. Thanks
