How long have you been turning?

Had a go on lathes of friends in the mid 90's. Bought a Wivamac when retiring. Just wish i had more time for turning. Hans

    Fastening device

A couple of years ago when i was still a raw beginner, I was experimenting with locking boxes. This was a box with bayonet catch and here a bayonet with pin on the outside. Hans

    sharpening with a tormek T7

I use a Tormek, a SuperGrind 2000. It is the best way of sharpening turning tools for me. Because you need more patience than I have to (re)shape a tool on the Tormek, I built a simple holder to use the Tormek jigs on a common grinder. I read Tormek is trying to sell an imitation. This...

Woodfast C1000 Lathe Info and photos ( SOLD )

What a beauty, this is the lathe I was going to buy back in 2001, but then Woodfast went out of busuiness. I bought a Wivamac DB1000 instead, which i don't regret, but I still have a soft spot for the C1000. A pity I don't have the space for a second lathe. Hans

    dust extraction

Paul, I use something similar, the Axminster ADE1200. I think I had more dust in my workshop with this extractor on than off. The dust level only improved after I installed a fine dustfilter. I would heed Chas suggestion, put it outside or use a fine particle filter. An overview of dustcontrol...

    Petit rien

I found Elaeagnus angustifolia for the translation of 'olivier russe'. Although elsewhere Sweet osmanthus, (Osmanthus fragrans) is suggested. Hans

    Pendants

Chris, I think the Tony Witham chuck may well be used for this type of pendant. A friend made me a glue chuck for it. If you were to make a glue chuck like that with a convex surface for the pendants, it would certainly work. But probably a piece of scrap screwed to the chuck with a hollow in...

    Powercap or Aircap?

Tony Spear wrote: In the link you can read: I think this is misleading. A couple of years ago 3M reintroduced the Dustmaster. I was told the SARS scare of 2007 caused a massive demand from hospitals etc. At the moment most businesses in personell safety stock them. Just google 'dustmaster...

    Woodcut gouges

Just where I was a couple of months ago. I bought a pair of unhandled Sorby 16 tpi chasers from Turners Retreat. While on a short holiday in the south of The Netherlands I had a one-day course with Jan Hovens, an inspiring teacher. Although I have several DVD's on the subject it is very...

    Power carver

I am in the market for a small power carver. Its main use will be decorating work off the lathe. Anyone using a Proxxon MOS carver? Suggestions welcome. Thanks, Hans

    Asian stripe ebony box

I think this is a great box. Whatever the reason to put the boxwood in, in my eyes you have a stunning result. I am not much for copying, but I will make an exception here if you don't mind. Thanks, Hans

    Wivamac Lathes

Hi Marc, I am afraid I will be no help at all. I have had my DB1000 for 8 years now. It was adapted to fit in my workshop by Willy Vanhoutte. These lathes are popular in Holland. In our club of 16 members there are 4 Wivamacs. Generally I am happy with the lathe, but there are a few things...

    Spiraling out of control

I would suggest viewing Mick Hanbury's DVD's Making and decorating platters / boxes. Iirc it is in the platter dvd that he shows how by lightly scratching the surface with the spiralling tool while the platter is turned by hand to find the angle at which you get a clean result. If this doesn't...

    Oak bowl-Piccy question.

@paul: The picture of the oak bowl shows off the wood very well, being sharp where it counts. The color seems natural, as far as you can tell afterwards. No ugly harsh shadows. Full marks. I wish all the woodturners that send in pictures for our website would do as well. @jenx and others: My...

    Oak bowl-Piccy question.

As Steve said, small aperture. Use a tripod or even better flash. Focus on a about 1/3rd from the nearest point of the bowl, keep the release button pressed halfway, (re)compose your shot and release. I disagree with Chas in regard to zooming out. In general it will improve the composition...

    Finishing lilac?

On some lilac branchwood I used Chestnut acrylic sanding sealer followed by carnauba wax on the polishing mop. Colors are still fine, but it was turned dry and there never was any purple or pink. Hans
