    Help! Very wet oak pics

Got this oak from an old fallen trunk this weekend. It was very mossy and wet but the heart wood seems to be sound. The outer layers were very pulpy. Will it be workable if I dry it properly? http://colin89fair.blogspot.com/

    Finished bowl pics

Thanks Dave - I'm really just a beginner so appreciate the support. Thankfully it didn't turn out turn out a horse's ass, but it did put me off the thought of finishing completely by hand - too much time to sand out all of the nicks etc - in fact, I gave up on a couple in exasperation. Maybe...

    Finished bowl pics

I've finished the bowl - did it by hand for the experience - not a way to make a living!! :D Took nearly a day of hand sanding to smooth out sufficiently... May finish with wax/steel wool. Would welcome thoughts. Haven't figured out how to put pics up here yet but the link should take you...

    More pics of burr elm(?)

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZUNfpMGllK4/S ... h/elm3.JPG tulsk aka John seems to have won the wood recognition competition - what I thought was oak may well turn out to be elm - thanks John! From its shape and bark, I had assumed oak - there was no leaf to help identify, but there is a replica...

    Bowl carving with pics

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZUNfpMGllK4/S ... /bowl1.jpg I started this yesterday with another odd-shaped piece of burr oak rescued from the tree after the chainsaw crew had mangled it somewhat! I wanted to try to carve it by hand for the experience and to contrast with turning so I gouged out the...

    Mice carving

Hi Paul and Wizer, Yes, this is a first attempt - well, I did make a rocking horse for the kiddies about 18 years ago but that was on a different scale altogether! I really just followed the burrs to keep as much of the oak as possible and the mice were hiding there all along  I used to...

    Mice carving

I've finished - well nearly for now - the carving from the wedge-shaped piece of oak burr. The full set of pics and commentary is on my blog at, http://colin89fair.blogspot.com/ but I'll try to hotlink some pics here. Would welcome feedback - bear in mind I had to use my mobile since I still...

Tools for fine carving my first project?

I laid a claim to some burr oak last weekend which I've talked about in the wood turning forum. But I have a small offcut which I thought I could use for practice to see what state the wood is in - it seems to be quite dry, possibly since the tree has been dead in parts for some years - some of...

    Oak Burrs

Hi Paul - I didn't think so, but when I checked on one of the links 1st thing today it took me to my sign in page. So, until I can get them (and if) onto a public website, it'll have to do. As far as I know, That's the case for pics with this site at the moment? Sorry and all....unless you want...

    Oak Burrs

Hi loz - no, I don't live in Murloug Bay - it's owned by the National Trust (UK) and there's only one dwelling remaining - the one in the pic. Used to be Jerry Fitt's holiday spot and is still 'owned' by the Fitt family - it's about as beautiful spot you'll find anywhere in Ireland I'd say...

    Working with oak burrs

Thanks Big Shot - yes, I had noticed that boiling and then drying appears to prevent further movement. There's me thinking, 'Ooo, these are nice. Let's do something fancy with these tomorrow!' I actually removed the bark in situ as it was teeming with wild life of the smaller variety, so the...

    Oak Burrs

Hi Duncan - sorry some of the photos weren't the best, but only had the mobile phone with me. My partner has a friend who was into turning in a big way until fairly recently - kids etc! He came over tonight to see them and reckoned they were already pretty dry given their weight and the fact...
