    What is it?

It looks like something used to texture the background of shallow carving although the handle doesn't seem to be made for striking.

    Restoring an old hand drill

Corr.. I was just about to write that the frame looks like a beautiful piece of steel and was thinking Germany or Switzerland then read the other thread and found it has all been said already. I don't know how I missed this first time round. A wheel brace but not as we know it. Good job on...

Workshop open week end/ charity event update

Wow - that's quite a spread. I have half a dozen end-of-the-last-run holdfasts to add to my bits. Lots of the great and good tell me they are going. This is shaping up to be a really important event; to buy seriously good kit, to get top notch advice on using it and to raise a lot...

    Replacement Irons for Wooden Planes

I think you're on the right track there Duncan. File it square, then work on the underside until the far end of it makes straight - across contact with the iron ( checking up to the light as you have been) and work on the top/front 'chip breaking' area last. I'd recommend a large, smooth, single...

    Udentified wood

Wheel hubs were made from Elm exclusively because of its reluctance to split. The hub holds all the spokes that come out in all directions. Much as the Elm seats of Windsor chairs act as the centre, key point of the chair frame holding all the back struts as well as the legs.

    Hand Saw Sharpening

Reading some of the prices quoted for sharpening hand saws leaves me very suspicious. Most of the second hand saws that I see need partial or full re-cuts, not to mention many jointings and touch - ups. When you do it yourself it's just part of the job and you can take your time but what...

My first infill go easy with me

It's the steepest slope of all Mark, the black run in fact. Looks like you've done a very good job with the infill, I've not attempted a shoulder plane so I can't empathise but I imagine it must be quite a headache to fit. Especially if there were dents to contend with. Lovely bit of wood...

    Midlands car boot sales

Sorry not to see this post before but Long Marston Air field. (We've just got back.) Open every Sunday morning, not too far from you I think. Plenty of tools.

    Travisher

I'd guess that drawknife to spoke shave is equal to scorp to travisher. Both smaller versions of the same profile blade but set into a frame with a mouth for smoothing and finishing work. What a spokeshave does is evident in its name but does a travisher travish? Is that a verb? - I bet it is...

    Steel Sole, Norris # 10 - a like.

Yes Andy, raw linseed, the plane and wedge were immersed in it for 24 hours. One more good thing about smaller planes, the whole lot fits into a lasagne dish. (wedge separate and weighted down).

Out of the oil bath. Some stray file marks to deal with still. I think I am going to order some tool steel for the uppers and go the whole hog.

A bronze lever spring???: Phosphor bronze has 'springs' listed as one of its uses, and so do other recipes of harder bronze that I have noticed in my metal trawlings such as: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosphor_bronze http://springs.aero/uncategorized/nicke ... e-springs/...

Many thanks for the picture and all that info Richard. It's good to hear that the # 10 is the style rather than the size. Mine is getting on for twice the size of that one Bill made, nice to know it is a copy of the smallest. We will be at your do in June so I'll have a good scrute. I...

    Travisher

Very good Tony. That's what full size plans are for - setting fire to. I assume the two hex socket bolts hold the blade in place by putting pressure on the tangs. What are they threaded through? Is it just the wood or did you have to let in nuts?

    Steel Sole, Norris # 10 - a like.

That's the feller Andy. Here's what I am doing with the next one. Taking the width of the sole plus 1/16" for peining and scribing that depth on to the side. It's a lot easier that measuring and scribing with a rule. I've already done that with cutting them out. Why measure twice with...

    Steel Sole, Norris # 10 - a like.

Hi Caz It's a Dog Leg Scribe - at least that's what they are called round here, maybe that's just a Brumigumism. Maybe there is a more technical Sheffield term; it is Moore and Wright. As long as you are happy that you can get your edges straight, square and parallel, you can reference your...

    Steel Sole, Norris # 10 - a like.

Thanks folks Pete - the dove tails were fine to pein. Apart from the fact that the most movement was required from the pins. the tails still needed to be closed up around them and it responded very well. slower to move than mild steel but just as malleable in its own, tougher way.

Thanks CC - that's very interesting. Googling it, I found a place quite close that stocks that and more tool steels of varying toughness as well as the exotic blade stock so if ever I get curious about that I can have a play. At the moment I am quite in awe of o1; although it is tough to work...
