Fibre speeds and speedtest by Ookla

Just to put this to bed, I bought a new to me 3yr old Dell Optiplex to replace my aging Inspiron and using speedtest in a browser tab on the new pc gives the true maximum speed now. So somehow my old pc was messing with speedtest when used in a browser.

Fibre speeds and speedtest by Ookla

I had Txxxx fibre installed last year 300/100Mbps which although it was error free in the most part didn't seem on my 10yr old PC to give much advantage over the old fttc at 30Mbps I had for years before that. My contract ended and a black Friday deal gave me 900/300Mbps for the same price as...

    hearing

I think all deaf men must suffer the same with their wives, mine drives me crazy daily with conversations through walls etc, I have enough of a problem when you are in the same room facing me dear! I have NHS aids, one ear near completely deaf the other trying to catch up. One of my hobbies is...

    Backup software recomendation

I've been using Macrium for quite a few years, its set up to take a full backup on 1st of each month then incremental backups daily, keeping several of each just in case onto a second drive in my PC. I also do a backup to an external drive every 3 months. Its been so long since I interacted with...

I did drop a few hints...

Ah but the NHS now offer bluetooth aids and they will migrate me over to them real soon. Well that's what they told me 12 months ago, still waiting....

    Woodworkers tool kit 1962-4 style

Around £20 was considered a tradesmans wage in 1964 if I remember correctly.

    I’m lost

I recently had a dripping bathroom tap and thought it a simple job, stripped the tap head off, cut the seat, fitted a new washer, job done. But it wasn't, the tap still leaked. I had bought a 10 pack of washers off Ebay and on inspection against some I found in an old tobacco tin, the new ones...

auto centre punch, how long do the pins last?

I resisted the temptation to go "auto" all my working life, always have 2-3 normal center punches in the drill rack ready to use. I recently saw Ebay had auto's for £3.60 delivered and bought one, at that price if it only does 10 marks before its pointless I wont care much. Regrind and go again...

Just a quick google https://www.electricaldirect.co.uk/product/mk-logic-plus-13a-2-gang-type-ac-usb-socket-with-2-x-usb-3a-white-809983 Lots of other UK recognised brands available. You now get to chose between type A or C usb sockets.

    WiFi extenders

If your a cheapskate like me you can always make use of all those old wifi routers you dont use any more as wifi extenders, repeaters, access point and network switches. Example here

    Not so smart meter

Make sure you photo the reading sent to your old supplier and notify the new one of the reading you sent. I had a right old fight when I changed suppliers, the old one didn't like my final reading and estimated well over what I had used. The new one and the old couldn't agree who's final reading...

Check your dashcam ...especially if it's a Nextbase

Mine is bottom end of the Nextbase range but I just did a check and it draws around 370mA at 12 volts through its 5v reducer so shouldn't be a problem to leave it connected 24/7 without flattening the car battery.

Check your dashcam ...especially if it's a Nextbase

https://www.amazon.co.uk/iFixit-Prying-Opening-Assortment-Tools/dp/B0762BVXDY/ No doubt there are cheaper sets, this is just an example.

    melting/removing contact adhesive glue

Inflatable boaters use MEK (Butanone) to soften/remove the old glue. I would guess that acetone or toluene would work too.

Check your dashcam ...especially if it's a Nextbase

I've had the same problem with Nextbase, the batteries are made of chocolate and the Ebay replacements are about as useless too. I think the alternative to having a dashcam that never had the correct date even if it does record when you need it to, is to use a non ignition feed to the camera so...

    Not so smart meter

Some of the old pre smart meters would deduct 1kwh from the running total units used for every kwh that was exported with your PV system. So your general electric billing cost was reduced. I was unlucky in that my old black spinning wheel meter didnt run backwards, so no Brucy bonus for me. My...

    NVR rocker switch bargain

I bought one just out of curiosity. Thanks OP. I would have found it cheaper to just throw them in the bin rather than sell them, although I am glad they didn't take that route. The item is listed with fees on ebay, it came in a £1 very sturdy jiffy bag by recorded delivery £2 and with a...

Old EON Master / Slave Sockets

I put one on my TV multi socket feed in order to turn everything off at night. You have to hit the tv remote on button twice with a couple of seconds delay to fire it up and thats fine, but the annoying part is when streaming with a low speed internet connection a spinning circle while loading...
