    Drilling through cross-grain

It would help if I could keep the drill straight when drilling through timber mounted across the grain. Is there any way I can improve on this? It's completely useless to me. I'm using a 10mm bit in a Jacobs chuck mounted in the tailstock.

Help please - tail end wobble

Has this ever happened to you? You do something for months on end, then all of a sudden it doesn't work ? I've been making these for a while and have an order to fill, but I can't get the thing to run true. The tip and the 'whorl' appear to be fine, and it feels right all the way up the...

    Turning long, thin spindles

I know I'm not the only person who has difficulties turning long, thin spindles, with all the vibration and whip associated. I've bought myself a 'steady', which is currently being milled to fit my lathe, but can I just mention the article in December edition of 'Woodturning' - P.15 to be...

    How can I turn wood-black

I need to turn small black spindles, about 1.5" x 10". Blackwood is lovely, if difficult to turn and a bit expensive. I tried the wire wool and vinegar thing, but after a week of soaking together, nothing happened. Ordinary wood stains are another alternative, but not everything seems to...

Help with sharpening bead forming tool - please.

I bought one of these at Harrogate, and now I need to sharpen it  I saw something on YouTube, and it just seemed like wrapping some fine abrasive around something roughly the same shape. I also tried to sharpen the edges a bit, but I'm not sure I've improved it too much. Now, I...

    Is wood hardener any good?

I'm trying to drill holes in spalted beech, which can be a bit punky. Is it worth trying wood hardener, or is it just a botch up?

    Pyro advice please

I bought a cheapo pyro set at Harrogate Show, thinking it made sense not to spend too much until I dipped my toe in the water. Now I'm thinking I might not have done myself any favours. It's certainly not as easy as it looks, but there were very few instructions with it (Antex Craft Pyro...

    I need some help please

I have a Record Power grinder with 8" white and 8" grey wheels. I've got it set up for a Woodcut Tru-Grind sharpening system, which means I have to remove the rest on the white wheel side, so when I just need a quick pass, I confess I use the grey wheel. I've just set the jig up to sharpen...

    Could anyone help please?

I need to make a 'Diz'. Bodrighy will know what I mean. It has to be in the form of a large button, about 3" across, recessed like a button and with four different sized holes in it. I've been turning a cylinder then drilling the holes with a drill press and rechucking to make the recess...

    Laminated blanks

Can anyone tell me where to find laminated blanks larger than pen blanks ? I'd like to turn spindles about 12" long.

    Hole drilling advice please

I can't seem to drill a hole of any kind, in any work piece, without it waggling about and making the entrance hole too big. Always seems to settle down eventually, but ruins the entry point. Not only on a deep piece, it also seems to happen on a piece as shallow as a couple of inches...

I deserve "I told you so"

Supposed to be at a 3-day village craft fair this weekend. Was worth my while last year but nothing was moving. I decided to chuck a lot of my early stuff, which I'm sick of looking at, in an "Everything reduced to £2" bin. A woman mulled long and hard over one of my yew egg boxes, brought...

    Bowl Gouge sharpening

I'm still trying to get decent edges on my tools and have had another go with my Tru-Grind. I can sharpen my spindle gouges by hand :? but I'm a bit in awe of the bowl gouge. I've got a passable edge on it, but it's quite vicious and catchy. I'm sweeping the wings back a bit more each...

    Woodcut Tru-Grind problem

Because I'm a weak (old) female, with a touch of arthritis, I can't tighten the wheel on my Tru-Grind. I'm using a wrench, which is chewing the wheel up, so I'm not as quick to sharpen my tools as I might be. I've e-mailed Woodcut but they haven't responded. I'll buy a new system if...

    Black Palmera Help

Can anyone advise me how to handle Black Palmera? I've bought a few pieces for an order and it's got the better of me :? My tools are sharp, but they're almost bouncing off this stuff, while the end grain's almost punky. Other than bin the stuff, is there anything I can do please ?

    Our cool new page header

I'm going to regret asking this, but, with our swanky new UK Workshop header, is there an easy way of knowing whether we have private mail without clicking on the PMs tab - the way we used to? I felt sure the little bell would waggle about, or change colour, if I had, but hey, it doesn't ...

I'm not a lover of Monty Don, but he's starting a new series, next Friday at 9pm on BBC2. First is working with green wood.
