    wood choice for table

Hi My daughter wants me to make a dinning table, but wants it in a dark (Mahogany) coloured wood. Given she will probably change her mind in a couple of years there's no way I am making it in Mahogany, so was wondering if Poplar could be stained, either that or Maranti. Any ideas?

    First Workshop build.

Good quality T & G cladding can be expensive I was quoted £2/m. I used rough sawn treated timber 150mm x 50mm (60p/m) in a board and batten construction . I didnt go for a pitched roof just a flat roof with permaroof metal sheeting. The flat roof made for easier construction and insulation.

    Workshop sizes?

I would just check with the local Planner and building control. Keeping to the maximum height can be a problem on a wide building if you want a pitched roof. I had this problem so I went for a flat roof clad in a good quality steel sheeting. Still gives my eight foot height inside all round.

    Rust in shed-workshop.

Hi i don't think you should accept rust as being inevitable, i have never suffered from it in my workshop? I do have mine fully insulated and in winter have a heater on a timer, but then i live in the North East of Scotland and I normally have to dig a footpath to my workshop in winter as the...

    The Woodrat thread

I bought mine second hand so I don't know if they have solved the problem of the movement in the rail. I found that any reasonable sized piece would cause the rail to tilt a bit. So I made a variation to a mod I saw. This has the fixed clamping brackets running against a piece of MDF board so...

    Oriental Box of Draws WIP

The top draw requires a slightly different approach having the curved shape on top. The draw front is the same piece from which the top rail was cut. However, after sanding the top rail the shape is not an identical match any more. So I re-cut it (still from the same piece) by sitting it on...

    Oriental Box of Draws WIP

finished the frame now. the top is a series of roofing slats which I made narrower than the suggested 3/4" as they follow the contour better. Started on the four draws, which are being dove tailed. the drawings suggest the fronts and back should be 3/4" thick, which I thought was a bit...

    Oriental Box of Draws WIP

Hi, I have decided to have a go at making Jeff Greef's Oriental Box of draws. http://www.jeffgreefwoodworking.com/pnc/Boxes/Oriental/. I started with the top rails and drew out the design so it could be cut out and pasted onto the wood, as suggested in the text on Jeff's web site I allowed...

AW10BSB2. Axminster table saw after market fence

I also find I have play on the fence and had to put some gaffer tape under it to get it to lock square (think I need to revisit my Maskery DVDs) The crown guard could do with some improvement as well and apart from a few niggles I like the machine and the sliding table does get used a lot.

Something simple from some old scrap

SWMBO wanted another spice rack so I copied (apologies to the designer) the one she already had. Using some old bits of pine I salvaged from a work room which was being refitted. The only cost was the Lazy Susan on the bottom which is the only one I could find.

    found at local tip

Dick I am afraid you are mainly wrong Granted a lot of scrap goes to China but comes back as some of the tools and other goods you buy. Your paper goes to shotton North Wales and is turned back into the newspapers your read, the alumimum goes to Warrington to be turned back into aluminium...

The measure of a good internet service.

I don't know about you but I think the measure of a good internet service is how the deal with complaints. I recently bought a brassed rim lock and mushroom door knob handle to go with it from www.doorchic.co.uk. The rimlock was just what I needed and was the second one bought from them. The...

    Flat roof for workshop?

I had the same dilema, and opted for a flat roof. Mine has 4" polystyrene between the joist which leaves the 2" air gap above, then membrane, OSB membrane and rolled steel sheeting. Works a treat gives me good headroom inside and keeps it within the planning regs. Thought about the one piece...
