    Back here

Hi folks: Been away for a couple of years, with various life changing events happening. Looking forward to joining in again, and hi there to all who know me. Good to see the site going from strength to strength.

    Sheet Goods question

OK folks: I'm doing a number of cabinets (wardrobes, bookcases and study filing cabinets) over the next few weeks. The intent, for various reasons, is a mix of blockboard, MDF and ply raw materials, with poplar edge banding (all will be painted a silk white finish). Not high end stuff, but...

    Cornwall is steep...

Well, I don't know how much effort it took for Alf to carve her workshop out of the hillside, but the bits of Kernow I saw this last week were all either going up or down... SWMBO went for a run, as she is wont to do, and nearly had a heart attack. Oh, and the Doom bar at Padstow is well named...

    The Incredible Exploding Whale

Completely off topic, but for all who haven't seen it before, this old clip is one of the funniest things ever to have made the internet worth while... The title of the post says it all... http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3712178515303087869

    Advice on trailer tyres

OK boys and girls: I'm re-commissioning a 30 year old Mirror dinghy. As part of this, the trailer is getting some tlc before I commit to towing the thing half way across Europe. I want to replace the tyres. The originals have "4.8, 4.00 - 8" on them, and the wheels on which they sit seem to...

    Take you back at all?

Summer's here, junior school sports day yesterday, number 3 son (on the left) got seriously airborne... It's truly weird to watch them growing through all the stuff I used to do, but this brought back the memories big time.

    Sheet goods advice

I'm re-doing some cabinets/buit ins, with the help of my trusty new sawguide: what do people think is the best cost/finish option for plywood? I'm looking at 3/4" and 1/2" sheets, that'll be lipped with solid wood where appropriate, and painted. I've used cheapo ply before, but found the...

    Health Warning

Well, it's always the one you don't expect that gets you... I spent Friday and Saturday heaving garbage out of the way, and then re raftering and boarding our loft to store all the junk that accumulates but can't be thrown away in life... It was darned hot up there - as in losing about half a...

    Review: Eurekazone Stuff...

OK Folks, some time ago I mentioned that I'd ordered the 'Eurekazone SGS 100 system'... "What the hell is that?" I hear you ask... Well, it's a sort of poor man's Festool guide rail system, but 'poor mans' is an unfair adjective. Here's a picture of the package, from the manufacturer's...

    Ahhhh!!! World Cup relief...

With apologies to Gill and other enthusiasts... 0830 today: New Zealand v Ireland Ireland scared them last week, both sides up for it today. 1100 today: England v Australia England lost last week, realistically will do so again today, but continue to develop behind the pack. 1400...

    Interesting (free) utility

Anyone who has forgotten a file on their computer while out and about will know how annoying it can be. This looks to be a useful little program that allows you remote access to all your files from a laptop, PDA, windows mobile phone or another computer...: http://www.avvenu.com/ Note that I...

    Seen in the Thames

About 2 foot long, one of maybe 15, outside the Swan Pub at Radcot. He came and hid from the sun under some weeds at the water's edge - wish I knew how to 'tickle' properly...

    Guttering Prices

Anyone know if Screwfix's prices are 'as good as it gets'? I don't have a feel for whether I'm better off going down to Jewsons/ Travis Perkins, or just ordering on-line and be done with it. It's only for some shed re-design in the garden, but it adds up pretty fast using their prices, by the...

    Spare a prayer

I've just listened to the soldiers talking on this BBC report: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/5062828.stm As an ex-infantryman, it's pretty impressive. These young men were dropped into hostile territory, fired at some 10 seconds after landing, and spent 6 hours in a running...

And the 'most surreal news item' prize is awarded to...

Just saw this in today's telegraph - you know those brutal stars of the hard man's game, New Zealand's All Black rugby players? well: Handbags and tears???? I'm wishing I knew some New Zealanders I could rib about this

    Afternoon Project

I've been 'out of action' all weekend with a damaged back, and it's been driving me nutty. Anyway, by this lunchtime, I was able to stand again, and, bored, wandered into the garage, where my eyes fell on one of my Grandfather's shoulder planes. This one is around 100 years old, but had at...

    Crows Mobbing Hawk

Hear some cawing out in the garden this afternoon: looked up, and saw 2 crows 'seeing off' a hawk. Not the best of pics, because snapped in a hurry, but quite an impressive scene. Hawk flew off ok, but those crows don't take rubbish from anything...

    Respect!

Well, it's taken three years and a lot of blood, sweat and tears, but SWMBO is now a fully qualified teacher, and has got a job starting in the Autumn. Had her first day as a paid teacher doing supply work this Friday, and loved it - reminded her why she went through it all... :)
