    Red Lead Substitute

Jason, Sorry to disagree with you but in order to prolong the weathering characteristics of the paint finish and thus prolong the life of the timber it is important to put two coats of gloss paint on any item that is for exterior use. Something that is often overlooked is that both the...

    Red Lead Substitute

Hi Richard, Once you have prepared the timber ready for painting i.e. rubbed down with sandpaper and treat any knots with a knotting solution, you need to prime with a proprieretry Wood Primer, usually available in pink or white from most paint manufacturers. To get long lasting results I...

    roof shingles

Hi Steve, You may wish to check out your local yellow pages under roofing material suppliers such as Asphaltic, Sheffield Insulation and the like. I must admit that I have not come across metal shingles similar to the bituminous shingles used by Tommy Walsh, however I have seen metal cladding...

    Cheap HVLP Spraygun

Andy, The main causes of the orange peel effect is one of the following: 1. Pressure is too low 2. Nozzle too big. 3. Paint too thick (Usual Cause). However, be aware that changing these parameters can lead to other problems such as: Increased pressure can, if not careful, lead to fogging -...

Undeliverable emails, new type of spam?

John, we've had this problem for the last couple of months at work. The email tends to come in two forms: 1. Undelivered mail which, of course, you haven't sent in the first place. 2. Emails supposedly coming from reputable sources which have included the HSE and recently even genuine...

    Advice Required

Hi Houtslager, Many thanks for the reply which confirmed my thoughts on the matter. Once again this proves that the final result is all about taking your time during preparation and following the instructions. Cheers Karl (who is about to call his customer and pass on the bad news)

    Advice Required

I have a customer that has used a traditional yacht and boat varnish with an eggshell finish over oak veneered plywood panels and what he describes as 'solid hardwood' which has developed milky patches   Given my basic knowledge and the information provided it would appear that...

    Signals From The Bunker

Solar reflective paints should always to be used over the top of any bituminous surface which should never be left in its natural state i.e black. The reason for this being two fold, first of all, left untreated bitumen will degrade under ultra violet light significantly reducing the lifespan...

    Advice on books please!

Hi Ali, If you are studying for your NVQ level 2 I would suggest the following two books by Brian Porter and Reg Rose. 1. Carpentry and Joinery - Bench & Site Skills 2. Carpentry and Joinery - Work Activities. Both these books are available from Amazon. Good luck with your course Karl

How many forum users does it take to change a light bulb?

This would be the same health and safety people that came out with the regulation that you cannot climb a ladder unless it is tied off at the top, completely ignoring the fact that you have to climb the ladder in order to tie it to a safety point. Karl (one of the silent majority that couldn't...

    A roof height and angle

There are three types of asbestos that you should be aware of, Brown, Blue and White each being easily identified by its colour. Of the three the blue and brown are classed as the most dangerous and were banned some 20 years ago. White asbestos (chrysotile) whilst still dangerous is the least...

    Any helpful suggestions???

Have you considered using a mobile drill stand such as the one made by wolfcraft available from most diy shops for about £25. I've had one for a while now and find it useful when I want to drill straight or angled holes accurately and cant use my drill press.
