    Chinese wooden hand planes

I got one of these when I was back in China visiting family. It costs 72 Yuan, which is about 6 quid I think. The body seems to be made of some sort of Rosewood. In fact the grain patterns are very similar to the fretboard on my Indonesian made Ibanez guitar, so it's probably some sort of Asian...

Does anybody know what this finish is?

I'm not sure if there's any wax on it right now. I certainly didn't put any on myself but I suppose it might have come from the factory with wax+oil. How would you go about getting the wax off?

Does anybody know what this finish is?

My bass has lots of dings on it and from what I've read oil finishes are easy to touch up. So I was thinking of sanding down the damaged areas and then reapplying some oil. The body is made of alder and has a slight satin sheen to it. The manufacturer recommends regularly applying lemon oil to...

Replacing bandsaw blades and general bandsaw setup

I got a really cheap benchtop bandsaw off Ebay a while back and I managed to break the blade that came with it doing a rather tight corner on a guitar body.So I ordered another one from Dragon Saws and it broke at the weld the first time I used it. I contacted them and they were kind enough to...

    Bandsaw blades

What happened to dragon saws and when was it? I've got a tiny benchtop bandsaw and they were the only people who I could find to make blades for it.

    Cigar Pens

What's wenge like to work with for a pen? I almost bought a piece from Craft Supplies a few days ago but I was worried it would splinter all over the place. They look great those, especially the Wenge.

    Sharpening jig/bench grinder advice

I think my tools we need sharpening soon and I'm looking to buy a bench grinder. Somebody mentioned in another thread that I can just get a grinder and use the toolrest that comes with it until I buy a proper jig for sharpening. Has anybody else had any experience with this? Another question...

My first go on the lathe...

I think I'm getting slightly better at this. The one on the left is some mystery wood I got with the Rutlands kit and the one on the right is "Wanx River Rosewood" that I got from craft supplies today. I also picked up some Bocote and Padauk which I've yet to use. I have a feeling the Bocote...

My first go on the lathe...

I made another pen today and it came out much better this time. I also tried to do a bowl with some offcuts of Sapele I had. The outside seemed easy enough to do but when it came to the inside the bowl gouge kept "catching" on the wood as I cut and it was rather scary. Am I doing something...

My first go on the lathe...

Produced this: Turns out it wasn't tight enough without the brass tubes and it wouldn't spin with the mandrel, making it very hard to turn. So I glued some tubes in, trimmed them and produced this: Stupidly I tried to test fit all the parts without putting any finish on the pen or even fine...

Dakota tools from Rutlands - are they any good?

What about the "Peform" stuff from Axminster? http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Perf ... -21761.htm It's HSS but cheap, so is it also of questionable quality?

Dakota tools from Rutlands - are they any good?

Rutlands have a sale going on and I was thinking of getting their pen turning kit and a 3/4 roughing gouge. What do you guys think of the quality of their stuff? https://www.rutlands.co.uk/machinery-&- ... ing-gouges

That's looking really good! The shape is really interesting, reminds me of a cross between a Dean and a Vox.

Buying a lathe (EDIT: Just bought a lathe)

I picked up the lathe today. My arms still hurt from carrying it up from the guy's basement and then down to the car..... I need to buy some tools, which ones do you recommend I need to get first, just to turn small stuff to start off with. Also, is a grinding setup essential? How come...

Buying a lathe (EDIT: Just bought a lathe)

Hey guys, I'm a bit of a hobby guitar builder and I want a little benchtop lathe to turn some guitar knobs on, as well as pens and other little things like that. My budget is pretty low (~£100 max) so I've been looking at Ebay for stuff. Anybody have any particular suggestions? Do I need a...
