Thanks to Vince at the Turners Workshop

I've used the Turners Workshop a few times now and always been impressed. This week Vince helped out with a problem with a pen manrel, that wasn't his fault. His customer care is 100% spot on - thanks Vince! Cheers Dave

    Another Stanley No 4

Given to me by a neighbour when helping to clear her garage. Not in good condition but I de-rusted it and I think it will do for what I would need. Looking at it I would guess it being from the 50's. I do need a new rear handle (tote?) so if anyone has one to sell or can point me in the...

The foot hut safety products - warning

Tried to buy a pair of safety shoes last month from this company http://www.foothut.co.uk/ - nearly a month later, no shoes, no response to emails and I have since found a few other warnings on various websites. They also trade on ebay as Vangard Safety Products - could well be the sign of a...

    Sweet Chestnut

Is it me the wood or the tools? - just can't seem to get on with Sweet Chestnut. Admittedly I am not an experienced turner but this wood seems so open pored! Trying to turn a goblet - end grain is giving me grief - the rest of it needs a lot of sanding! Using RS finger nail gouge and Spindle...

    Soffit and facia

I would like to replace the soffits and facia boards on our semi detached bungalow. It would only be the front and side both about 25' long and simple runs. I am thinking wood rather than UPVC - what do you guys think? If wood, can I get PAR treated or would it be best to treat it myself...

    Bead forming

Hi All, Wonder if you can help - I would like to turn some beads for my wife to make into jewelry. Had a go using a skew but was looking at this from APT thinking it could be quicker and give me a more spherical result? The reviewer says he didn't get on with it - any opinions? Thanks Dave

    Axminster AWVFS

I have bought an Axminster AWVFS (variable speed) fretsaw but i'm not sure if the Hegner quick release clamps will fit! It came with clamps that can be used with flat or pin blades but it has allen key screws - the lower one being almost impossible to get at without taking the side panel off ...

    Hinges for pocket watch

Thinking of turning a case for a pocket watch insert but I can't find a decent hinge - a box hinge may work but might make it too thick so I was thinking of using something like the ones used on pen boxes:- Any ideas where I can get them? Ta Dave

Free 3-in-1 Transitional Crib Bed Plan

I got this plan a few years ago from Rockler but sadly the 'project' did not work out for some unknown reason! It has only been out the folder twice - once when we got it and once when we found it this weekend! Free to the first person to PM me  Regards Dave

    Drill bits for pens

Where do you guys get bits from? I have just got a flat top rollerball kit and the tube is 9.34 - the nearest bit I have is 9.5 adding a bit for error it would appear to be a bit loose :? Would an imperial set be better maybe? Cheers Dave

    What am I doing wrong

Turned a bowl yesterday in Oak (first one for many years) but I couldn't stop getting some tear out on the grain ends - is it a case of better sharpening of the tools (was getting some shavings so thought they were fair) or is it the wood, speed (was slow as it was about 10") or just bad...

    Which Band Saw

I am on a limited budget and have limited space but have narrowed my choice to the Jet JWBS-9 here or the SIP 01484 10" here I guess there will always be a time when I wish I had got better and bigger, but for a DIY'er that mainly keeps to small projects and cutting hard wood for the lathe...

Hi All, As per my first post in the general section, new to proper turning so would like some advice regarding pens. Why pens? well they look like a good/useful present to give friends an family! I will be getting a mandrel from Axminster, but wonder what other items are essential (baring in...
