    Oak Windows Finishing advice

Unfortunately i'm not a fan of the silver look and the windows will bleed on the granite walls before long and have decided that I really don't like the look of the Sikkens or coloured microporus finish. Having now applied Osmo UV oil to the windows I have just noticed the wood butchers...

External Bi-Fold doors - some advice please!

My friend had a set of bifold door made by a joinery firm using centor running gear. After I looked at the doors, really the only specialist parts were getting a cutter to create the slot for the door seal. Each door panel was created in the usual mortise fashion and the door gear screwed on to...

    Oak prices

I pay £2300 for kiln dried oak for making windows. Usually marked as 75mm but it comes over 80 most of the time and I machine down to 79mm 0.064m3 gives about £150 I'm not one for wasting as much as 50% but you really need a good amount of excess. Boards easily come up to 500mm wide so 18" is no...

I have a similar set of window cutters made by whitehill - I also couldn't really see how they were so expensive until they were delivered. There are a lot of cutters in the set and they are very large  see pics attached. Andy

    Felling a London Plane

no offense wizer but the value of the property behind the tree should have no bearing on the report and decision to fell the tree. If the houses are an issue then a tree surgeon could bring the branches down to a height where it is unlikely to fall onto the houses. I was really more getting at...

    Felling a London Plane

The tomogram is very misleading because of the sensor positions being either side of a butress - giving the impression of less wood. It is also doing a large amount of averaging probably on the wrong side. I think it need to be re-analysed with far more sensors. The % of solid wood on the...

    Whats the ridge joint called?

I think it's called a scarf joint. Connecting two ridge beams end to end. Always fancied having a go at it to see if it works. I'm sure there is an exact name like splayed scarf or sliding scarf etc. I think it might be wedged scarf as there is a peg in the middle to do the work. Andy
