    Clothes horse/throw

Can anyone point me in the direction of a design for a piece of "furniture" that stands by ones bed and holds the clothes off the floor until next required at the break of day. Normally, for me, it is usual to discard everything on the deck when retiring, but, as i'm nearing old age I really...

    Bending old mahogony.

Hi All. I have just steamed a couple of strips approx 60 x 12mm for and hour with no noticeable difference in the pliability of the wood at the end. I assume it is too old and too dry. Can anyone help with advice on the way I should be trying to do it. I'm looking at a 90 degree bend with...

    Lignum vitae

I have inherited a set, of lignum vitae bowls circa 1890's that used to belong to my Grandfather. Their value is small, but for turning are a bit of a treasure. I know mallets are a good item to produce from this wood but what to do with the other three? Ideas gratefully accepted.

    B&D KA1000 sander

Just had a mail from B&D saying that spares for this sander are not available. A ten pence plastic leg that supports the base has broken and £37 has just been wasted. Before I buy anything else from them I'll check the availability of spares first. Regards John

    Drawers and draws.

What's the difference?. Is a draw a shallower version of a drawer or something, an Americanism, or just a cool way of saying drawer. Regards John

    Bandsaw blade advice

What bi-metal blade? I'm sawing 5" teak and the standard Record blades are lasting no time at all and although I have no experience of them and they seem to be at least thre times as expensive, bi-metal blades seem to be the way to go. The machine is a 350 model with a 3/4" blade capacity. I...

    DeWalt D26500K Planer

Hi All. Bought this tool from Machine Mart a week or so ago on a promotion day for about £155. Started using it in earnest today, fitting the first four of nine pine doors I have to do. It took 4mm cuts with ease and I found it very easy to handle, even adjusting the depth of cut on the move...

    Flat top pen help

Hi all. Bought a couple of flat top pen kits from S & B a while back and, unfortunately, they came without assembly instructions. Looking at one of the "How to" videos on Turners Retreat it shows the top part, (the cap), of a similar pen being cut back after polishing so the tube can enter the...

    Tear out

Evening all. I'm machining some Sapele veneered MDF and getting tear out. Tried scoring the underside but must have missed the line by a few thou and still ended up with it. Getting close to not having many more chances. Thought I could lay some hardboard under the cut but perhaps there is a...

    Pen finishing

Made this pen today using the Linseed oil/CA glue/wax polish method of finish but I got it seriously wrong somewhere. I applied the glue, as mentioned in another post a few days ago and used the activator to set it but ended up with a very uneven surface which required a lot of sanding back...

    How to insert photos.

I've tried searching but have gotten nowhere. I have just opened a Photobucket a/c and would like to add pictures from there to any future post or to my, as yet empty, gallery. Can anyone guide me to any previous posts on the subject, or kindly explain the procedures, (to a real computer...

    TC planer blades

Hi. Can anyone give me some idea of the durability of tungsten carbide plane blades compared to HSS blades. I'm planing African teak, which is killing my HSS blades, in a 10" Tersa block, so, replacing the blades would cost around £180 and I'm not sure if the expenditure would be justified for...
