Looking for an elegant joint solution

Thanks Johnny, much appreciated. I also love books and do have a few too. And I think you’re absolutely right about the “noodlers” on YouTube as well. I’ve watched a few but just don’t return to those. I’m inspired by those that clearly have the knowledge and a wealth of experience… and who are...

Looking for an elegant joint solution

Firstly, great book recommendation. Thanks for that. Unfortunately, I felt the tone of your comments quite discouraging though. In “Aunty Joyce’s” book he does illustrate a “slot-screwed joint” on page 177, top right (see attached). This is the type of concept I was thinking of. He obviously...

Looking for an elegant joint solution

    * Me too... I really enjoyed making those. :) *I'm now thinking I may make the tenons longer on the long stretchers; as through tenons (something I haven't done before) and then wedge them with a darkener accent wood. (I have a spiral upcut bit for the mortising too so blow out on the back side...

Looking for an elegant joint solution

Interesting thought. I can see why you say that too. I do tend to agree as well. On this occasion though, I only have that one size of dimensioned material. It was all bought cheap as a job lot of rough sawn off-cuts (which I then milled down to arrive at the 22mm x 42mm). My thought was that it...

Looking for an elegant joint solution

Hi Johnny, Thanks for your thoughts. Lol, it does take me while to make things but it's a hobby (and I like the challenge). I want to further my skills and want to make fine furniture eventually so tackling these challenges is something I want to try out (and learn from mistakes/experience etc)...

Looking for an elegant joint solution

Hi and thanks. As you say... "I would be a bit wary of just using tenons in this instance"... that was my worry too! "then the legs will have to bend at the top to cope with any movement" - that was my fear and hence the rabbit hole! "a split will open up in the end grain sides of the mortices"...

Looking for an elegant joint solution

Thanks Sam, I do definitely want to make a large farmhouse-style dining table in the future. I'll need to move my workshop first though. It's way too small for anything that big at the moment... but when I do, I'll def be looking at breadboard ends and following your methodology for that...

Looking for an elegant joint solution

Point taken. To be honest, that door has only been opened once in the three years that we’ve been here though. That was when we needed to drain the heating system down and the shortest route to a drain outside is via that door. It’s an old house with an extension and the extension has two newer...

Looking for an elegant joint solution

Thank you. Using the worst case calcs from the shrinkage calculators above, 5mm max averaged between the two legs would be a max flex of 2.5mm perpendicular to the 150mm (leg length down to the next joint) which doesn't seem too bad! Or does it? I'm not sure. That would be the simplest solution...

Looking for an elegant joint solution

Thank you. Really good thoughts... so I've just checked the moisture values for wood in the house (on finished pieces - a couple of coffee tables with slab tops) and also the wood in the workshop. There only seems to be a few percent difference which is interesting. I was expecting more. (I have...

Looking for an elegant joint solution

Thank you. Good thoughts and suggestions. I had thought about adding stretchers at the side, just under the top but not the long “H” rail between them. Interesting thought. I did want to keep the bottom space under the bottom shelf larger than the rest though, to allow for boots so don’t really...

Looking for an elegant joint solution

Thanks for the reply. Some over-thinking going on… absolutely definitely! Lol! I’m not in the trade and am always looking to further my skills… Each project I do is more complex than the last. I wanted to see if it was possible to achieve an invisible joint (but also allow for any wood...

Looking for an elegant joint solution

Hi everyone, I’m newish here. This is my first thread. I have posted in other threads but this is my first question!… I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for an elegant solution to joining the legs of a shoe rack frame to a top shelf to allow for the wood movement in the top shelf. It’s all...

    Banggood, VAT, import duties

Mine has just arrived. So only a few days turnaround… I ordered just after midnight on Tuesday (so Wednesday morning, really) and it arrived just now (Friday morning).

    Banggood, VAT, import duties

I bought one of these yesterday and already have a VAT invoice (sent by email upon request from their website, following the link in their order confirmation email). The invoice shows a VAT number and the VAT breakdown. I’ve bought from them before and have been very happy with some of the...
