    Old workbench with unusual feature

It's bad enough getting my own blood onto my builds, that would be a dreadful mess! I'd lean towards it not having been used that way, the hole is near the original vise and over the top of the box-end which would act as a rather nasty reservoir.

    Old workbench with unusual feature

I will share pictures when it is done! I have made one replacement drawer so far following general cleaning. The sides are well out of wind so it'll be quite a job.

    Old workbench with unusual feature

Not surviving, nor any sign of attacment for such a thing. There is a square hole at one end, but doesn't look like a planing stop point. What would it be for? There is a large hole in one side with the remains of threads in, it's offset from the leg but I need to inspect closer to see what...

    Old workbench with unusual feature

Have you looked into a grant from the Heritage Crafts association? They have a round of funding at present and Plane making is on the list as a strong option. I was considering applying myself and was torn between planes and clogs.

    Old workbench with unusual feature

Quite, my need for a vise so I could get on with work quickly did battle with my desire to conserve the bench. In the end I compromised by fitting a vise to my modern viseless bench to work with until I can make a suitable wooden screw vise. An elegant solution to your needs! I have an...

    Old workbench with unusual feature

Thanks for the thoughts chaps! Same conclusions as I came to. It's built in under the tool well. A large box, with bevelled edges. When I found it the thing was clumsily planked over and these nailed down. I replaced these with a lid that matches the bevels. There are no signs of hinges. It...

    Old workbench with unusual feature

Hi folks, I've been lucky enough to come into this large, quite old workbench. It looks like it has been through a few stages of life, it was pulled out of a workshop in a cow shed and within it was... well lots of things. Some of them sanitary. It has this deep storage box in the middle. It...

    When beads meet...

Diolch! Much tidier than my original. Given the amount of movement I'm expecting scribing would be spot on

    When beads meet...

Hello gang. I'm doing some reconstruction work on a modern Gypsy Caravan, this involves a rebuild of the back walls, some improvements to water dispersal and some new windows and seating. The attached picture is the new frame for the lower back wall. This also supports the bed and will...

    Moving a wood burner.

I've seen shaker burners with very long, slightly inclined flues. Definitely an improvement I want to make as soon as possible.

    Moving a wood burner.

It didn't yesterday, the exterior chimney produces a good bit of draw, such that even when starting the fire it pulled smoke through before the system was dry, let alone warm. I have a CO monitor naturally.

    Moving a wood burner.

Condensation is a possible issue, though once it all warms up enough I think there will be enough hot, dry air to clear it. When it's set up properly, if there's any sign of moisture build up, I'll put in a drain valve. Rocket stove designs burn a little differently to the typical wood burner...

    Moving a wood burner.

Thanks all for your input. I decided on balance that keeping the existing chimney location was optimal, but moving the stove location to a more central one would allow better heat distribution and allow me to manage the fire from my normal work area better. Please excuse the building site...

Converted Hammers for Men In Shed Members with Needs

Access to making is so important and empowering, even more so for those with accessibility issues. I'm glad others are working on accessible tools. It's a peeve of mine they aren't commercially available.

    Moving a wood burner.

Such thorough regulations make me proud to be British. That'll take some tea and many biscuits. Many thanks! Ahh, someone needs to watch The Great Escape again! ;) I've tried the fan, added insulation etc but it's not enough really. When I build the new stove I am planning on putting in either...

    Finishing

I'd go for the toughest paint I could get in that situation. Once the kit is set up on it, they won't want to take it all off to touch up the few high-traffic areas.

    Commercial Steam Benders?

I'll drop you a pm. May be able to help.

    Moving a wood burner.

Hi all, I'm having a major re-jig of my workshop and I'm finding myself stymied in my attempts to organise. The location of my wood burning stove seems to be in the way of any organisational structure. I can come up with. It is at the far end of my workshop from the door and does not heat my...

Reynolds Hand Morticing Machine restored (finally).

Apologies for the Necropost, but I'm looking for information on my Reynolds 'Blackfriar' mortise machine. I bought a set of Reynolds branded chisels for it, but they don't fit. Their taper is too large and they have indexing points which are not present in the machine. I can't find...
