Arundel lathe on offer - FREE for collection

This was a message I posted a few days back with the title "Arundel lathe on offer". I realise perhaps this was understated ... hence the addition of the three words to the new title ... Cheers Toby ---------------------------------- Hi I've an Arundel Junior lathe - that was my...

Picked up my first lathe today

As a completely unbiased enormously happy Wivamac owner ... who "upgraded£ to one from a very old (but good for what it did) "first step" tool ... I think you have a serious quality bit of kit ... that like buying any "good" tool for the job will last you and deliver "for the foreseeable" ...

    Arundel lathe on offer

Hi I've an Arundel Junior lathe - that was my Grandfathers, and I learnt to turn on when I "inherited" it. When its motor died, I treated myself to a bigger and newer toy that would allow me to do the decent-sized bowls that I aspired too. But it was good for spindle work (stools, lamps, etc)...

    Fein Multimaster not working ...

Hi Dibbs I'm learning stuff - went and had a look, after reading around a bit to have an idea what I might be doing. The brushes are both about 9 mm from base to contact area, and both have smoothly worn contact surfaces, no chips, etc. I don't know how worn they need to be before replacing...

    Fein Multimaster not working ...

Help! My Fein Multimaster isn't working. Halfway through a job it's suddenly stopped running properly. It's a few years old and has seen quite a bit of use. No smoking etc, not running hot. It still moves - it's not dead - but it oscilates very slowly and has no power, you can stop it by hand...

Chisels ... and customer service too ...

I have been using a few yellow-plastic handled Stanley chisels on my bench for a long while ... they are good, for what they are ... but they don't have or hold an edge like (say) my Clifton plane or my AI or Sorby turning tools. I wanted something better for cutting dovetails and the like ...

Long and fairly thin dowel ...

Certainly seems finely adjustable - curved blade held with 2 screws in sliding slots seems to allow for some fine adjustment ... maximum diameter of 1/2" on the one I have ... but could shave off a couple of mm less as far as I can tell ... but not done it yet ... Smaller sizes available ... if...

Long and fairly thin dowel ...

I wanted some 70 cms lengths of dowel, 10-15 mm diameter, made of the same wood as the rest of the piece. Tried making this (pushing it, as I have a sort-bed lathe!) and the whip was way beyond my skills to control. I don't have a centre-steady ... but even if I had I think I'd have struggled...

    Good whittling knife?

I was lucky to be given a Flexcut "Carvin' Jack" knife ... it MUST have been secondhand or on a major offer as I'm sure my partner would never have paid anything like what Axminster are currently asking ... it's a very very sharp, really nice tool ... and something that's been great as a source...

Recommendations for a 6mm mortice chisel.

I bought a set of Narex mortice chisels from WH - fantastic tools - transformed my mortices (compared to doing them with cheap bench chisels) - really nice to use ... and not serious wallet damage for what you get.

    Dust Extractor Choice

+1 for CamVac - I have one which is a great extractor when sanding via a hose to the orbital sander or the MultiMaster, with a funnel next to a piece on the lathe, and is also a great clean-up tool for collecting dust, shavings, etc. Occasional use as a blower, shifting the hose to the lid, is...

    Well done Axminster & Nobex

It's not new, but I think it's still worth saying (I work in the Health Service, I know these things ...) A lever on the work-holding clamp on my Nobex mitre saw has broken. I contact Axminster as I know they sell these ... although I didn't buy the saw from them ... to ask if replacements are...

One for the tykes amongst us

ASK tools is very good, and helpful. Snainton Woodworking is OK - good for turning stuff especially. I think Boddy's is expensive and overrated - for tools and timber. I have bought a lot more on-line ... Axminster & Workshop Heaven have been rapid and excellent suppliers every time.

    New Non-chinese Lathe Recommendation Please

+1 more for the WivaMac ... I have been delighted with mine

    Narex Chisels- Mini review

My set of mortice chisels are metric, and measuring them at the cutting tip, not half way up the haft, they are accurate or less than a tenth smaller ... so the mortices they cut out measure dead-on (slight side abrasion in use?) ... maybe not so good if you want to work in imperial measures ...

Rounded bevel sharpening got even simpler.

It may not suit all of you - but I've been delighted by the recent "Trizact" belts ... they run really cool in both fine sharpening and coarse (re-)shaping modes ... bought some AI unhandled big scrapers at the Harrogate show and the 600 belt quickly got me the shape/radii I wanted without...

    Great service!

No ... not Axminster this time ... at the Harrogate show I was looking at Bessey's ... not buying, but I asked after purchasing replacement end-pieces for a K-clamp as some of mine were lost/broken, and they are useful for setting the clamps level on the bench when gluing up boards (say) for a...

    Long handles on scrapers

This may well be obvious to many here ... but ... A year or so ago I had a nasty accident ... making a medium-sized natural-edge bowl had a catch with a scraper whilst finishing the bottom ... it dragged my left hand over the top of the rest into the horrible edges and did nasty stuff to my...

    Steb centers

VERY disappointed by the large and small diameter ones I have - maybe it's my tool control that's the underlying problem - but so easy (ie "routine") that when using them to rough down a spindle between-centres piece or a bowl-blank that I end up with the wood spinning whilst the Steb Centre...

    "Whipping" effect when turning

I haven't seen anything of the like for real ... but if the wood is flexing in relation to it's spin, and perhaps enhanced by it's compression ... can it be put under tension? A second chuck on the tailstock spinning on neutral bearings, under tension from the (more usually-used tailstock...
