Votes wanted for Woodwork shop setup funds application

Thanks to all who have tried to vote. Aviva have sent an email apologising for the problems and say that in compensation they have increased the fund pot by £200,000. If you have tried and been put off please have another go. Kind regards, Mike

Votes wanted for Woodwork shop setup funds application

Don't think its anything other than an appalling setup. You would think that a company as large as Aviva would have a site fit for purpose. Thanks for all your efforts, its really appreciated. Regards, Mike

Thank you all for your support. It is very much appreciated despite the difficulty of accessing the Aviva site (one of the worst I have come across). On the subject of bequeathing tools etc one of our Calne members is on the national Men's Shed UK executive. There is an AGM in November so I...

Votes wanted for Woodwork shop setup funds application

Hello All, In my capacity as chairman of the Calne Men’s Shed I am appealing to all my contacts for support in gaining enough votes to get the application to Aviva for “Tools for Calne Men’s Shed” through to the next phase of adjudication. I hope you will not take offence at my use of my...

    Hollowing tools - another thread!

I made mine similar to the ones above, also you can use a homemade shaft with a carbide machining tip, the most useful is a circular one suitable for cutting aluminium, steel ones are not sharp enough. Mount it on a square shaft at a 45 degree angle. You can buy these, Simon Hope sells a typical...

    Metallic gold coloured filler

If using the metallic fillers with Araldite you need to make a very stiff mixture, at least 50% metal powder if not more. The other problem with using epoxy is that you are likely to get pinhole voids due to air in the mix. Always build it up above the final level required. Done correctly you...

    Bri's experience so far :-)

Hi Bri, Have a look at http://www.evenparenterprises.com/ . They have an excellent arm brace designed for just this situation. I use one for fly fishing as my arthritis makes using my thumb very painful. The brace is quite expensive but works very well. You may be able to adjust your technique...

Just got a lathe. Now what do I need

I assume you have a micrometer and /or Vernier for measuring. Carbide tooling is not really suitable for such small lathes, learning how to sharpen HSS tools will really pay dividends. A set of small drills will be useful, it really depends on what you want to make. Taps and dies of appropriate...

    Record CL4 Vari-Speed lathe

Wouldn't be without my CL4, do all kinds of work from miniatures to 30" platters

    FINALLY got me a lathe!!

Hi Eddie, Congrats. The CL1 is a much more solid lathe than the DML36SH (which I started with). The bed bars are solid and slightly larger diameter. The motor is more powerful, the whole lathe is a more rigid machine. Hope you have many happy hours turning on your new lathe. :occasion5...

    Yet another Wood ID.

This looks like Laburnam. I have a piece about the same diameter heartwood cut down 8 years ago and stored as 5 ft length. I recently cut a slice off the end with a bandsaw to check the grain and it is virtually identical to the photos. mikec

    soon to be turner

Hi Paul, I have had a CL4 for about 8 years and so far have no problems even with large diameter out-of-balance items (around 23"). The lathe is really solid , no problem with bed bars flexing or any other parts moving when they shouldn't. Just remember to add a drop of oil every session and...

    Glueing wood to plastic

Hi, I have had some success with Starloc products. They supply various types of cyanoacrylate glues and epoxies with a plastic primer that they claim will allow bonding of virtually any kind of plastic. I managed to bond wood to a bath panel that had resisted all attempts using standard...
