    Yes, it needs to be steamed. i'm no wood scientist nor do i have hundreds of years of experience or any inclination to argue endlessly with anyone here on this forum. But, i have read that steamed beech checks less due to sap removal caused by steaming. cheers, dan

    I polish the backs of mine. I have two LN mortising chisels. i take a piece of flat wood and smear some diamond paste on it and then polish til i can see my reflection. does not take long with the diamond paste. ciao, dan
