What are the definitive smells of the 70s?

I worked in a Sainsbury’s supermarket as a kid (other supermarkets are available) and it had a distinct smell every time you walked in. Same smell when I walk in to one 2day, them’s were the days. CG

    R15 Router Lift and Motor

Hiya, I also had the Rutlands one, also bought when last on offer. It was a solid piece of kit, well engineered. The only thing I regret was not looking for a setup where you could ‘lock’ the unit when you had the bit height set ala Incra/Jessem, other than that worked well. CG

Screws that screw into steel ?

Check out Matt Estlea channel on YTube particularly the installing windows and a bed episode of his van fit out. He uses Rivnuts to fix the bed supports, plus he has an issue with one of the nuts and you see the solution he comes up with. CG

How to shim lintels (process/materials etc)?

Horses for courses, you pay your money and you make your choice. I chose the grout over mortar and probably like mortar users I’ve no cause to regret my decision. In building, woodworking and indeed life you’ll find that there are many ways to skin the same cat In the end the decision is yours...

How to shim lintels (process/materials etc)?

I might be tempted to use a dry pack mix instead of mortar something like webercem grout which can applied in a variety of consistencies and has non shrink properties. Just used a bit with slate under a steel beam. Should be able to find it at your local friendly merchants. CG

    Steel Beam question

An authoritative answer indeed. Thanks to everyone who responded I’m now clear on the meaning and purpose. However, @Adam W. mentioned isolating the steel from the mortar. Clips that I’ve watched online, dangerous I know, just show mortar being slapped straight on top of steel. What do you...

    Steel Beam question

Hello everyone, not strictly a workshop build but a build nonetheless. In my Structural Engineers builders details that specify a steel beam over a bifold door opening, it shows a ‘split block course to suit’ on top of the steel beam and a 100 x 50 C16 wall plate on top of that. I’m curious...

A lot of my Festool stuff came secondhand from eBay and after receipt I send it off to Festool for check over and repair where necessary. Check out the website for details. You don’t have to accept what they say in terms of repair and they send it back to you if you decide not to go ahead...

Another Fobco Star pillar drill resto

Hi Nic, Pleased to meet you. To be honest, I haven’t done a lot recently. I got annoyed with the layout I had in my single garage ‘workshop’ so I spent some time doing a ‘proper’ redesign, or at least a design I’m more comfortable with, to give myself more bench top space. I’m almost there now...

Overhead storage needed in single garage workshop conversion

Free is definitely always the best. Doesn’t matter what you buy it’s almost always gone up in price! I also have those 64l boxes, agree they are very handy and stack well but they made a 7 box high by 3 box wide stack in the garage, in space I could I’ll afford to lose. In the end I got the...

Another Fobco Star pillar drill resto

Afternoon All, Just had a go at reassembling the spindle. I’ve got Hoffman 115ac’s from Orinoco. Got the bottom bearing on the spindle but I was expecting having to press the spindle and bottom bearing into the spindle housing, but it just dropped into place, no interference fit as I was...

Another Fobco Star pillar drill resto

Evening All, @ChaiLatte you make a good point. So I found a section through an ac bearing :- The outer race shoulder is thicker on one side than the other which I can relate to my bearing. Therefore, the thinner wall of the outer race should face down as the axial load in that...

Another Fobco Star pillar drill resto

Evening All, So, very shortly I’ll be reassembling the spindle on the star. Mine is a solid one 15mm diameter. Reading on another thread, there was a comprehensive guide to installing the bearings point 2 of which said:- ‘Slide Bearing (136) with the wider face of the internal race facing...

Afternoon all, Just checked how the paragon primer had dried. I’m not 100% with it so I’ve ordered up some PT8 thinners For the next coat. For a bit of light relief 😄, I‘ve also got a Record No24 fitters vice on the go as well. Was my Dad’s which he carried up from the factory (English...
