    anyone using a folding rule?

mtnwinds is right on. For inside measurements--such as fitting a door--they are indispensable. Mine is an eight footer--roughly 2.4 meters--and that's pretty rare here in the States. As a matter of fact, when it's used up, I'll retire.

    US Magazines

No one has mentioned "Woodworking" yet, but I think that's a good one. I think it's a sister mag to 'Popular Woodworking" except it has no ads. You can download a complementary copy at their website. www.popularwoodworking.com

    Titebond

It hasn't been mentioned yet, but the TBIII has greater heat resistant properties than the other Titebonds. Also, the expected shelf life is ONE year. There is a little stamped code near the neck of the bottle. The first numeral is the year and the first letter is the corresponding month...

If you could live anywhere in UK, where would it be?

Although I don't live in the UK, I do live about 70 miles from Dublin, (TX--where they make Dr Pepper.) Edinburg is on the Mexican border--yes, that's how we spell it. And Stratford is only about 500 miles away around the Oklahoma state line. I have visited the Highlands though and I couldn't...

What Sort Of Music Do Members Like?

I'm from Fort Worth, Texas, and was recently visiting Edinburgh. At a live music pub--Sandy Bell's--I met a local Scot who, after finding out my hometown, yelled "WILLIE NELSON!" and "BOBBY WILLIS!" the rest of the evening. I was very impressed with this man because he was dead on with his...

    Buying small amounts of hardwood

If I were in your shoes, I would go down to the Bow Bar and think about it for a good long while. Seriously though, if you have to get more than you need you'll end up making more than one cutting board. It's a fun project and they're pretty nice to have and give as gifts. Check out the...

    Cutting Laminate

We cut plastic laminate everyday, all day, and for all of the oversized cuts we use a table saw. If you cut with the decorative side UP, then the blade is cutting down on the decorative side--minimizing chip out. Use a plywood blade or an aluminum cutting blade and you will be just fine. Be...

    Morris Arts & Craft Chairs

Woodchip, Good luck with your project. I just finished a Bow Arm Morris myself--a present for my daughter's college graduation--and I love it so much I don't want to give it to her! For the arms, I steam bent 1 inch thick material and the rest was made from 3/4 inch material. I built...

    Black Walnut - am I allergic ?!

Are you allergic to nuts? peanuts?, pecans?, cashews? If so, it's not unheard of for a woodworker to suffer the same symptoms from working with nut trees. African Makore sometimes affects people who are allergic to poisin ivy and poison oak.

    Liverpool football

I may be sorry I opened this up, but here in the Lone Star State, we're reading about how Tom Hicks is fouling up a proud Liverpool Club. Over here, he owns two professional sports franchises--the Major League Baseball Texas Rangers, and also the National Hockey League Dallas Stars. The...

Help...fitting windows into a wooden door

Clive, If a B&Q is a hardware store, then yes, a carpenter might be lurking around the tool section. Even better if you know of an old-fashioned Mom & Pop type of hardware store, they might just have a business card or three to pass out. I think you're on the right track, though, in wanting to...

Let us compare America with Europe

Losos, I'm enjoying the topic and the discussion. Leaving economics and politics out of it, I would like to think of a natural born Texan and a Scottish Highlander as being kindred spirits. There's a colorful history to both--albiet only about 500 years of European influence here in the...

Help...fitting windows into a wooden door

If your door is a flush veneered door--as in 'flat as a pancake'--then you could use a plunge router and a router template or jig and cut out an opening. A lite kit or glass bead could then be installed to hold the glass in place. If your door is in fact paneled--solid wood, but with recessed...

    Moving to England

00dannyboy, When you go to Scotland to "investigate" the whisky, check out a distillery called "Edradour" near the town of Pitlochry. Great whisky--though expensive--set in one of the prettiest parts of the world. Enjoy your tour over there and stay safe.

    Squirrel problems

They hate the smell of mothballs. If they are nesting in a hard-to-get-to place, maybe you can fire a few at them with a slingshot. If all goes well, you will get rid of them AND avoid prosecution!

    PVA Woodglue

Slim, it's my understanding that III holds up to heat much better that I or II. As far as waterproof glues go, you might try Polymite powdered resin glue. It's a bit of a task to mix, but the open pot-time is good and it's very stable.

    PVA Woodglue

You're right--dark glue line. It's not a problem for me since most of my work is fumed white oak, however Titebond II is also excellent and not as pricey.

    PVA Woodglue

Over here in the New World, there's a glue called Titebond III, and it's a great PVA glue. I'm just not sure if it'a available in the UK. Sounds like it may be similar to woodbloke's suggestion. Good luck in your search.
