    Lacquer and varnish

I have a small tin of clear matt lacquer and a tin of clear matt varnish, both water based and interior. These were purchased only several weeks ago. Today I had need of a clear finish, and on opening the tins they were both as white as milk even after stirring so I haven't actually applied any...

    Finishing quandry

As a new and learning woodturner, I have just turned a small piece of yew. It is actually one of the simplest pieces I've done so far, and is just a tea light holder for someone who likes candles. I have meticulously sanded all surfaces up to 800 grit. I am extremely pleased with it as it is the...

    Deep glossy clear finish

I'm learning slowly to do this woodturning, just a couple of months trial and error under my belt so far and thoroughly enjoying it. What are your recommendations to get a deep glossy clear finish on turned wood? Currently I'm going through Abranet 120, 240, 320, 400 and 600 grit with the wood...

    Reducing lathe speed

I have a 550w variable speed lathe with a minimum speed of 500 rpm. Can I reduce this speed further by plugging it into a 4000w 250 v AC mains PWM voltage regulator variable speed motor controller? Could this cause any damage?

    Turning speeds

A chart came with my lathe giving recommended turning speeds for different wood diameters when roughing, general turning or finishing. I'm very new to woodturning and only have carbide tools with square, round, and diamond cutters. I appreciate that normal tools require different techniques to...

    Any advice welcome

I've just bought a cheap new lathe to get me started. It is a Clarke cwl325 13" with variable speed. I have never used a lathe before so spent several days watching YouTube videos to get an idea what I was doing. Today I set up the lathe and mounted a small piece of pine about 40x40x300mm long...

    Table lamp electrical advice please

I've made a small wooden table lamp, and would like some advice on wiring it to a 3 pin 240v plug in accordance with UK regulations. My problem is, that with "normal table lamp" 0.75mm squared 2 core cable, the cable tends to be rather stiff when used with my very lightweight 10" tall table...

    85mm saw choices

I have a large, heavy circular saw, which is fine for big plywood sheets, but most of my work is small, so I'm in need of a small convenient circular saw and looking for advice. The following item has good reviews and I love the idea of the handy mitre base that I think would be very useful for...

    Dust extraction

Looks like I'm going to be spending some time at my scroll saw from now on, so I'm concerned about the dangers of breathing in fine dust. Through my big illuminated magnifier I can plainly watch the dust coming off the wood and floating around, and I just came out of my small garage/workshop...

    Cutting circles

I'm learning to use my scroll saw and thoroughly enjoying the experience so far. I needed to cut a circle about 4" diameter from 7mm thick plywood. I thought I had a foolproof method for doing this, but soon realised I hadn't as the cut was spiralling inwards so that by the time I'd gone full...

    Scroll saw recommendations

I would like to buy a scroll saw, though I've never used one before. After some practice I'd eventually like to make wooden clock type mechanisms and other small moving things with cogs etc. I've scoured reviews online, but entry level machines come with both good and bad reports. In order to...

Newbie - expect silly questions :)

Hi I'm Pete. I'm retired and plan to try my hand at a few woodworking projects and improve my skills, hence joining this forum as I know I'll need lots of guidance as my ideas surpass my woodworking skills. I get a kick out of creating something out of nothing, and have previously done this by...
