    English Workbench

Looks like some great work here 👍 Watching with interest as this year I’ll be building a (close) variant of this bench.

How to stop mice pinching the traps?

Screw an eye into the wall and use a wire trace to attach to the trap (pike fishing traces work well for this). I use this setup when out fishing and don’t want rats eating all my bait 😂

Is it worth trying to sharpen my Irwin handsaws?

I think even a brand new hardpoint saw will struggle with a rip cut. The teeth are faceted for cross cuts and they just clog up when ripping, especially with soft woods.

    Plough and Rebate plane advice

Worth checking that the irons haven’t been butchered. The sides should have a slight angle to them - just acute of square. If they have been sharpened square (or fractionally obtuse as I had on a couple) they can cause the plough to wander in the cut and leave a horrid ragged wall to your...

    What hammer for chisels?

Addresses some of this conversation - might be useful.

Honing bevel on a chisel with hollow grind

I only use them to speed up my workflow, as touching up a micro bevel is just a couple of strokes on the stone rather than regrinding the whole primary bevel every time. I will then regrind between jobs when the micro bevel is not that micro anymore!

Restoring Stanley No3 - advice please.

Any reason to not let all the metal parts sit in an electrolysis bath overnight? Would deal with most of the general rust without having to sand and remove material and perhaps help with that stubborn rod in the handle.

    Plane Knowledge Required

Interestingly, I asked myself this question a while back. I have a no3, no4, no4.5, no5, no5.5 and no7 in a mix of Stanley and Record. I prefer the Record planes for a reason I cannot quantify, they just ‘feel’ better quality, even though they are obviously very similar. However, I only ever...

Fobco Pillar/Bench Drill Ebay (poor advert) £50 starting, Royston

Yes, I’ve seen it done but you can still see the welds which, to me, defeats the purpose. It seems like a lot of work for something aesthetic on what is a working machine. I also quite like a machine that shows its history. That smile of shame may have been made by a master engineer when...

    Holdfast not holding wood down

My experience is that a 40mm top could be a bit thin for a good grip. 3-4” is ideal, but you can get away with 2-2.5”. To get more depth on a thin top, you could add material under the bench where your holes are (although this doesn’t work so much if your top has lots of dog holes). This clip...
