    Hydro power from small river?

My uncle brought a cottage and the garden shed was next to a stream. It had one light bulb in it driven from a water turbine; a couple of years later the waterboard were doing a survey in the area and made him take it out.

Helical slot in stainless steel tube - anyone have the equipment for this?

Have you thought about having a gear on the shaft instead of the slot and it is driven by a gear on the motor/gearbox? You could have two microswitches at each end of the travel to reset with some hard stops. I would think this would be more efficient than the slot.

    Batteries and chargers (AA/AAA)

I didn't know you could get Li-ion AA size batteries and it would be interesting to see if they are 1.5V as advertised or actually 1.2V. Reading one review they were 1.5V but not as powerful as stated. Li-ion shouldn't/can't be charged below freezing. I had a multi charger years ago and tried...

Any electric oven experts in here?

I had problems with a smeg oven and it was wired to a unswitched fused face plate. I removed the fuse but still received a shock. So double check there is no power before touching anything. Kitchen fitter wired the wrong wire to the fuse?

    Carpet and fitting costs..

I have done it a few times myself; mostly with foam backed. I have done a couple of carpets without foam backing and you need a stretching tool to get a good finish and get it tight on the gripper strip.

Quality carbide inserts for turning stainless?

If you want a sharp corner and only have a radiused tool you can dig the tool in at the shoulder to produce an undercut. A chamfer on the tip works just as well as a radius and is easier to produce.

Quality carbide inserts for turning stainless?

When I was an apprentice most of the tools were HSS and hand ground. As you say not that hard to grind and once the original shaping is done it does not take long to maintain them. Getting the top rake and clearances correct helps.

Quality carbide inserts for turning stainless?

We used to use a high top rake PVD coated tip for aluminium on our CNC lathes and it worked great for stainless. Found out by accident as the user once forgot to change it when changing over from an aluminium job to a stainless one.

Dust Extractor dimming lights in house

I would say it is pulling too much power and so starving the rest of the house. I had a similar problem with a milling machine or arc welder; I can't remember which now. It may require an upgrade to the incoming electrical supply unless you and the wife are happy with the lights dimming...

OMG, "it don't 'arf pen and ink"

Around here they use slurry from the sewage works and that really stinks. The farmers are supposed to plough it in within a certain time but if they do it still stinks for days. A local village had a pig farm and they used to put slurry on the fields for years. A housing estate was built and...

    What is this?

When I was a trainee the company brought bandsaw blades in a coil and you made it up to fit the saw. There was a cutter on the side of the saw with a welder and small grinding wheel. Cut the length of blade required Clamp the two ends with the jaws apart Turn on the power and pull a lever to...

    'Quiet' compressor? Maybe not

I made an enclosure out of OSB and put corrugated rubber carpet underlay on the inside. The ends were about 15mm longer than the sides to leave a gap for air flow. I don't have a decibel meter, but I don't need ear defenders with the enclosure on but did before the enclosure.
