    Compressors and dust

Hi all, I recently acquired a little Senco air compressor, mostly for dusting duties but with a couple of nailing/stapling jobs in the pipeline. The manual warns against use in dusty environments, so my question is this: what do you use to keep dust out of your compressor? A quick search...

    Powered Respiratory Protection

I have the Axminster and it's excellent. Well-balanced, comfortable, keeps your face cool when it's hot. No complaints other than the cost of extra batteries. But it'll last me all day so it's not a deal-breaker - can charge it overnight.

    Which 3d printer - 2023 edition

An auto bed levelling kit is a mandatory upgrade for an Ender 3 in my opinion (or indeed any printer without ABL). A Creality CR-Touch kit is about £30 and will instantly improve your quality of life enormously. Takes about 30 minutes to install and set up and then you never have to worry about...

    Which 3d printer - 2023 edition

Just chiming in with another vote for Bambu Lab. I have a P1P and it's magic. I've had an Ender 3v2 for a couple of years which is a great budget setup and perfect if you enjoy tinkering, but the P1P blows it away with ease of use and speed. The X1C is basically the same printer, but with a...

    Essential first aid items.

Lots of good gear suggestions above. However the one that is most important is training. Have you done a first aid/basic life support course in the last five years? If not, fix that ASAP. It's applicable everywhere you go, not just in the workshop. There are more advanced/specific courses...

    A little safety warning

Oof, that's grim. There was a video circulating a year or two ago of a guy in a machine shop who got dragged into a lathe. Horrific.

    A little safety warning

Just a quick story. I am a radiographer, and had an interesting patient yesterday, a man who had an incident involving a lathe. He mounted a piece of wood, turned the lathe on to find it was turned up to its maximum speed of about 3000rpm. Said piece of wood immediately flew off and hit him...

Collection of 3d printing files relevant for woodworking

Depends what you want, as there are a couple of different types. There are resin printers that are good for small, fine detailed things, but a filament printer is more generally useful and they are the most popular. There are lots of entry level options. I have an Ender 3 V2, which is one of the...

Collection of 3d printing files relevant for woodworking

They're hot things - the hot end of the extruder runs at around 200*C for typical PLA filament. If something goes wrong then they could be a fire hazard if left unattended. But that is *very* bad practice and anyone with a shred of sense will be aware of this, as with any other powered hot device.

    Reverse direction turning safety

Thanks - I suspected some sort of mechanism was required. I just bit the bullet and ordered one of the Axminster AT350s on clearance and noted it had a reverse option. I don't have a specific need for it, but have seen it done - particularly for sanding - and was curious! No specific plans to...

    Reverse direction turning safety

Hello all, A very noob question: My lathe chuck screws onto the spindle, and is held tight by the spindle turning in the usual direction. If the direction of rotation is reversed, what is to prevent the chuck from gradually unscrewing and potentially flying off to destroy whatever it hits? It...

    Yew egg

A little thing I made back in the spring. Just trying some things out! Had a little mishap with a skew so it ended up a bit smaller than I intended, but it worked.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

I love this! Do you have anything more on this build?

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Very mundane, but I am brand new to this so it's an achievement! Big scraper handle in ash.

    Tool handle (newbie project)

I made a handle yesterday! It turned out pretty nicely, although the finished product (a shear scraper) is a bit long so I may have to try and drill it out a bit more. First time attempting to use a skew which was interesting - much practice required! Next up, a proper stand for my little...

Whats your favourite penknife or multi tool .

I must stress it's the Spyderco PITS Mk1, not the Read one! I did get it from him though - he had them up for pre-order on BBF when they were first produced. It's an astonishing bit of design, I agree. There's nothing else quite like it.

Whats your favourite penknife or multi tool .

I have a Leatherman Wave which is useful but not carryable every day due to locking blades, thus I only carry it when I am going to do something which specifically requires it. I have a few pocket knives which I rotate, mostly Spydercos: a UKPK, a Kiwi 3, a Pingo (love this thing, just wish it...

Any must watch woodworking documentary movies?

I watched this recently: a little film about the Von Heune workshop. Really interesting stuff. Only made a few years ago, but it's fascinating.

Spb1 (my first electric bass guitar build)

Amazing! That wood is beautiful - you were right not to stain it.
