    Cedar of Lebanon

Just to update everyone who has kindly contributed to this discussion, in the end I left the bowl without a finish as it was mutually decided that, notwithstanding the potential difficulties of applying a finish, the smell of the cedar was too good to cover up and it would be nice for the room...

    Cedar of Lebanon

I I started turning a bowl in Cedar of Lebanon this morning. This isn't a wood I've turned before and I immediately noticed its slightly oily nature. As it is almost a year since your update, have you noticed any problems with the finish you applied then? I have to complete this bowl by Friday...

The shame of a tidy workshop

There is a solution to the untidy workshop. Just send a Whatsapp message to a Tory peer of your choice stating that your space is a "still a bit of a tip", then sit back and wait for the money (and top-notch designer) to roll in. Works for the prime minister, after all.

    And now the fun begins!

I haven't had a chance to use my SC3 yet - and it arrived on Nov 2 - but it was well oiled when I unpacked it so I have spent a bit of time cleaning it up. It would have attracted loads of dust and shavings if I hadn't. I can't stand the smell of white spirit/turpentine so I used a little WD40...

    And now the fun begins!

Today I took delivery of a new SC3 chuck. Tomorrow... new adventures in bowl turning! (The Pratt Burnerd chuck that arrived with my lathe has now gone to a good home).

    Handmade: Britain's Best Woodworker

I guess it's fair to assume they won't be using some old pallets and a bag of 4-inch nails!

    Chuck question

I have bought a few things from Rutlands, but I find that as a tool retailer they are sometimes a bit niche, and often overpriced. I don't like paying a premium just for a third-party retailer to stamp their name on a tool. The identical items can often be purchased elsewhere for much less. As...

    Chuck question

Thank you, that's very helpful. Yes, I do have the other set of jaws, so I am going to weigh up my options.

    Chuck question

Brilliant. I saw what you did there! But, yes, I will get a new one. Thank you.

    Chuck question

Hi, I'm a recent newcomer to woodturning and picked up a Record Power No. 0 lathe via Ebay a few weeks ago. It came with a bag of bits and pieces, including this three-jaw chuck, which I would very much like to identify. There are no markings on the chuck other than two numbers on the face...

    Happy to be here.

Time to 'fess up. Of all the potentially lethal equipment in my workshop, it was arguably the most benign that sent me to A&E. The 6kg Makita belt sander comes with a bracket that allows it to be inverted on the workbench. However, in this position there are no guards or fences. I was sanding a...

    Happy to be here.

Hi, I found this forum whilst searching for UK-based woodturning forums, of which there seem to be surprisingly few. So, I was glad to find this site, which looks like it covers my other interests too! As my Twitter profile states, I am a husband, father and - as it turns out - inept...
