(kind of) first project working with hardwoods

Not somewhere I have been to personally but have read about people using Men's sheds which appear to be all over the country so if you don't have your own equipment yet might be something worth looking into. You will probably get help & advice from more experienced members as well.

How can I order wood which won't warp?

Unfortunately, I don't really have an outside where I can keep them lol, this is just one stack of quite a few, I buy most of my Hardwoods but things like this Laburnum they don't stock. I also have some Yew drying as well because that tends to be Price on Application & I was lucky enough to...

How can I order wood which won't warp?

oint that everyone is making is that there are no guarantees when it comes to working with wood lol, all you can do is reduce the chances of problems developing over time, the Oak boards from B&Q that were mentioned might do a great job & never be a problem but the company know there is...

    Drying wood

Yes I am well aware of the relationship between vacuum & boiling point of water thanks, 20 years in the Royal Navy as an engineer working with all sorts of vacuum systems lol Heat yes for this small project I have a heating pad, the pad was supposed to fit inside the vac bag but it's just a...

    Drying wood

how long does it take to dry from green & how low can you take the moisture content? You haven't mentioned fans so I take it air circulation is just natural. Should be fairly easy to get hold of an old upright freezer & figure out a way to stack boards in it.

    Drying wood

Oh I think I saw that book some time ago but at the time it wasn't easy to get in the UK & there isn't a kindle version just the paperback lol yes the airflow is the only real problem I think, the water I have covered, I have a degassing chamber that I think I could use for the water collection...

    Drying wood

Anyone got any good methods for drying wood other than stacking it & waiting forever for it to dry lol I buy most of my hardwoods as kiln-dried slices so I am OK with boarding it, I was given some yew about 3 years ago & it spent the first couple of years as logs before I cut it on the bandsaw...

    Hardwood Dish/platter

+1 on that, will need to learn more about this, looked at building a solar kiln in my garden a few years ago but it was one of those jobs that I never got round to for one reason or another lol

    Hardwood Dish/platter

Thanks for the feedback, I wasn't sure what sort of size could be produced without worrying too much about warping. As this is a paid job & a retirement gift I would rather not have the Customer return later saying that there are problems with it. This will be produced mainly on a CNC machine...

    Hardwood Dish/platter

Looking for some advice on making an Oak dish/platter, it will be 16" in diameter & about 2" in height. I am now wondering if I should be making this using pieces glued together rather than one large piece as there will be a lot of material removed from the one side & not so much from the other...

Anyone have a tabletop CNC? What are the skills required?

OK in that case you would really be looking at an 8x4 machine so you can fit a full size sheet on which requires quite a bit of space. Yes you can do it on a smaller machine but from what I have read on other forums if this is something that is going to be a regular thing then those that did...

Anyone have a tabletop CNC? What are the skills required?

Really depends what you want it for & if it's for Hobby or Business use. What sort of projects would you like to use it for & what sort of materials would you like to be able to cut?

    Jet Bandsaw & blades

Thanks people, will take some pictures tomorrow when I am up at the workshop, if anything the blade is sitting to far forward, I originally tried to set it up as I have seen Alex Snodgrass do it with the bottom of the gullet on the crown of the wheel which didn't work so went for the blade being...

    Jet Bandsaw & blades

Yes I guessed that at the start but wasn't sure what pictures would be helpful, can you give me some idea what might be useful, I know this is something that I must be doing wrong but have tried a number of times & seem to get the same results each time lol

    Jet Bandsaw & blades

Anyone on the forum have any experience with a jet JWBS-18-M I bought mine mainly for resawing so most of the time it has a 3/4" blade fitted but my son wanted to do some projects so I bought a 1/2" & a 3/8" blade for him to use. I am having problems with fitting both these blades, the bottom...

Advice on how to remove "sharpie" writing on a guitar case please?

If something like acetone or nail varnish remover doesn't touch it then you might be looking at some kind of mechanical removal, when you tried alcohol bit you leave it a while to soak in? sometimes you need to do that & give it a few tries. You could try an acrylic scratch removal product...

    Car cleaning/valeting

Thanks for the replies, I may be over thinking this as I am not actually handing it back yet but yes they will take photos to send to Motability & then Motability decide what is fair wear & tear for a 3 year old car & what I have to pay for. I had a Motability car in 1996, at the end of 3 years...

Thanks I will have a look at that suggestion, like I said before the guy that gave it to me had no idea where it came from so could be anything lol I had a fishing rod given to me when I was a kid which if I remember rightly was split cane with a greenheart tip I haven't tried putting it in...

    Car cleaning/valeting

Anyone on the forum valet their own car? Looking for recommendations on cleaning products, I meant to get my car done by a Company but I have left it a bit late now lol, got the MOT coming up & as it's a Mobility Car the dealership will take photos while it's in so I need to do a pretty good...

    More wood identification please

Thanks, the guy that gave it to me has no idea where it came from, just that he had it lying around for a long time. Not sure much of it is going to be usable with all the splits & cracks that can be seen looking at the 2 pieces. Next thing is to find something to do with it lol, from what the...
