    Workbench Project

I had to remove my vice after about 15 years to clean / regrease etc. Pig to refit holding it from underneath... I can't quite guess how easy / hard yours would be to remove / refit? <grin/> I hope you don't mind it getting a few dings - looks good enough to eat off!

A long term experiment Very interesting results.

    Labelling system

Modern Dynotape is so much better than the old mechanical ones.

    8 point sockets

100% agree. Equally I gloat to myself each time I pick up a seldom used tool knowing it's the 'right' one for the job. Possibly my excuse for overspending on tools.

    Cheaper v more expensive tools

A clear indicator. With your costs, looks like a new saw, if you want to go that route. IMHO you got a friday machine, I would hope even cheap saws would last longer than that. You decide if you want to go for a better machine.

    Phillips / Posidriv Screwdrivers

Perhaps treat yourself? Ifixit toolsets are well made and cover most eventualities in the smaller range.

    Multitool advice

Corded Fein user, 5 years or so. No vibration worth talking about. Soft start, good range of tools available. Not sure there are 'cheap' options? Curious where @Adam W. found that experience.

    Leather honing belt for proedge

Be cheap and use a hand strop? Does the job.

Controlling a vac with remote (or anything <30A)

'Big Clive' has this channel - lots of interesting stuff (mostly far East). This is a tiny 'remote' and a black box capable of switching 30 amps (declared). I.e. should be good for a vac when starting tool X.

    Big Hammers

Looks like you need a moustache (and a beer paunch?) to swing one of those big ones.

Odd? Use for a tracksaw? 'Build your own guide'?

Bradshaw - works with 'nice' big timber. Love the use of the Al strip in the tracksaw.

    Tormke t-4 vs 'other makes'?

Already bought t-4 tks. Alt wheels can wait a bit!

    Tormke t-4 vs 'other makes'?

Pulled the trigger on t-4. So far so good. Wheel needed trueing.

    Whisky tumblers -advice please

Mmmm. I'd be very reluctant to drink from a wooden anything.

    Tormke t-4 vs 'other makes'?

Does make me wonder if you were too aggressive 'honing' the blades? 6mm in how many times?
  16. pe2dave

    Tormke t-4 vs 'other makes'?

'Blades' had reduced in width? Not clear what this means? 'Depth' (front to back) - wear through sharpening? No longer have a P/T so not a worry for me. Tks @recipio

    Tormke t-4 vs 'other makes'?

Tormek isn't green (should it be?) but a) has all the 'extras' b) Has pretty good all round reviews. c) Has a good warranty. Seems to ring a green bell? Is it worth the 'extra' money? Any views please. For kitchen knives and flat chisels, totted up to around £600 which had me wincing. If not...

3 piece loft ladder, how to lubricate?

All done. To clean it out I had to remove the ladder (heave it up into the loft!). Cleaned with wh spirit. Liberal spray with the 'dry' Wd40. Quick wipe, re-install. Makes such a difference. Thanks for the advice.

3 piece loft ladder, how to lubricate?

Understood. The one I have has ... reasonable treads. OK, bit hard when pushing suitcases up though. Being light it's not bad to shove up / collapse down - much easier when lubed though. Ptfe spray on the way - I'll degrease first though. Will report back

3 piece loft ladder, how to lubricate?

    1. Cost - makes no sense. 2. Weight? wood vs Al? I am 'old' (my definition). 3. Only have one rafter width - I doubt a wider ladder would fit?
