I wonder how much he was paid to do that video?

    Dry rods

Well, not really. Lime mortar lets the moisture evaporate out between the courses and cement mortar is pretty much impervious. Small gaps and shrinkage cracks in cement mortar can aid the passage of liquid moisture, thobut. Current thinking is, that the rise of liquid moisture stops at about...

    Dry rods

Plaster is know to suck up moisture like a sponge, but apparently brickwork doesn't. It's an interesting subject, to be sure.

    Damp proofing

After having read all of the RICS surveying course material, the RICS do not deny the existence of rising damp and refer to it continuously throughout the building pathology unit. I would imagine that the RICS think it is not conclusive and that the subject requires further investigation.

    Maths equation assistance

Phew! That bakes my noodle. I think I'll stick to working out how to build fan vaults with a stick and some string.

    Damp proofing

Interestingly, I'm taking the RICS Certificate in Building Surveying Practice and they list rising damp as one of the common defects which can be found in buildings in the "Building Pathology module". Funny really, because the video that I posted earlier is part of the teaching material from...

    Damp proofing

Yes, you said rising damp doesn't exist in your earlier post, but the two chaps in the video mentioned true rising damp, so I was getting confused by the two and as you are a surveyor I thought you might know the difference between rising damp and rising damp. And, I'm pretty sure that amongst...

How are you storing your tools?

I built a wooden tool chest for my stuff, it also makes a nice joinery project to get going with. They can be made out of ply or reclaimed flooring if you can't afford the timber to make a posh one.

    Damp proofing

I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few RICS surveyors arguing the case to try and cover their butts. What's true rising damp then, if rising damp doesn't exist ?

    Damp proofing

Based on the information in that video, you could argue that it isn't necessary, although you won't get your work passed by Building Control if you didn't have one. There you go, completely ambiguous and open for debate, like most things in life.

    Damp proofing

@Fitzroy Did you watch that video that I posted, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on it.

It's a bit dry, but worth a watch.

    Removing some of truss Webbing

Like all things it can be done. Components will need to be beefed up and the carpentry done properly, but it's not impossible. The span and the pitch plus the weight of the roof covering will all have to be considered before doing anything.
