    trellis arch garden thing

the plan's changed again! :? they now want bits to suspend hanging baskets from, so it'll look something like this now the crossbars are 6" longer, and since there's no longer going to be a panel on the top, all the panels will now be the same, as you suggest Dennis. should be slightly...

    trellis arch garden thing

perhaps, but i won't hold my breath. my mum can't decide whether she wants a bench or a new table and chairs for the garden now anyway. in the end she'll probably decide she wants to re-decorate the hall instead. cheers for the encouragement though Dennis, appreciated. oh, it turns...

    Performance Royalties, Song Royalties, Gripe.

exactly. 15 years ago an unsigned act would record a demo using a Tascam 4-track tape recorder, complete with hiss, bleed and the sound of the bassist's mum's washing machine in the background. these days, an unsigned band can record a demo in pro-tools, with all the effects and edit techniques...

    Performance Royalties, Song Royalties, Gripe.

no it's not. apart from the fact i clearly said project studio and not 'Abbey Road' or something. a few thousand pounds will get you a good laptop, a good firewire audio interface, and a copy of Logic/Ableton Live/Cubase to preference, plus some plug-ins. the quality of plug-ins has...

    trellis arch garden thing

i wanted a project, and for my sins they gave me one. although not a very big one. i wanted to build a garden bench, but my folks don't trust me enough to do that  instead, i was tasked with designing and building a 'trellis arch garden thing'. it needs to fit over a fairly narrow bit of...

    Performance Royalties, Song Royalties, Gripe.

the PRS collect because each time a song is played on the radio, it counts as a 'sale' of the record. different stations have to pay different per-minute rates depending on the number of listeners they have - for example, Radio1 pays a lot, as they're national, while your local radio station...

    Driving gripes....?

some tw*t in a BMW X5 nearly forced me off the road recently on a not-quite single track road, but not really wide enough for an X5 and a Fiesta at the same time. my main gripe at the time was that he's got an Off-roader and I am the one who has to drive onto the grass verge? wasn't a happy...

    Driving gripes....?

if it was illegal to reverse onto any road, nobody would ever pass their driving test, as the 'reversing round a corner' is exactly that - reversing into a road. of course, it's only side roads that you reverse into, if it were a main road you're going against the flow of traffic, and then the...

    Driving gripes....?

the ones that annoy me the most are the tailgaters. now, i drive 'progressively' when the road and conditions allow, but in a 30 limit, in a built-up area, then it's 30 max. the tw*ts who sit up my tail trying to pressure me don't seem to follow the same rules as me though. what i do, therefore...

garage drawer project - two hours and already screwing it up

well, it's finished. it's not pretty, but it's finished. solid enough, keeps the pencils, mini-screwdrivers, notepad and so on out of the way. i forgot to get pics today, i'll get one tomorrow when i'm starting my next project. it'll all end in tears.

    What would you do

i'd turn the stereo up, grab a bottle of cider from the fridge, and a pint glass from the cupboard. if he was still there by the time i'd finished drinking it, i'd go and see what he wanted.

    Import Tax

i wouldn't really know, to be honest, but the senior officers like to complicate things, so they probably have a system for determining what needs to be done for each package. we have lots of systems in HMRC. none of them work. what i wouldn't do, obviously, as an Officer of the Crown...

Can't turn my mobile phone light off

i had a similar problem. have you tried taking the battery out and then putting it back in again? that should have the effect of resetting it, worked for me.

garage drawer project - two hours and already screwing it up

i decided to start using imperial today, and so far i think it's working out quite well for me. should be finished tomorrow, just need to cut another bit for the back and pin it together, fix the supports onto the underside of the shelf, and that's me.

    Import Tax

i actually work for... ahem... HM Revenue & Customs. sorry :( i don't do any Customs work though, but if their staff is anything like my bit, then it will be almost entirely down to random selection and/or what package looks like it would need a lot of forms to be filled out for. they'll have...

garage drawer project - two hours and already screwing it up

cheers everyone, feel a bit better after that :) 'testing machine settings' - now there's an idea! i tend to just batter in, and then it goes pear shaped. i think i need to make some jigs for cutting and routing - at least then, even if the cuts are all squinty, i should be able to get some...

garage drawer project - two hours and already screwing it up

today's efforts were not much better. spent more time taking the router apart and putting it back together after a jam than i did doing the woodwork. and then, i was rushing too much to make up for lost time and made mistakes. quite disheartened now, to be honest :(

garage drawer project - two hours and already screwing it up

aye, finding that out  it was never meant to be a masterpiece by any means though - just something practical to keep the garage a bit tidier, and as a bonus get a bit more practice with the old joinery. shall see how it goes tomorrow.

garage drawer project - two hours and already screwing it up

i've learned my lesson today; measure the wood you think you've got in the garage, and measure the wood you're going to buy before you design the drawer. the design i posted here. the reality was not quite as picture-perfect as i'd hoped. my first problem was that i went up to B&Q and bought a...
