    Bolting together 2 x 2 by 4s

You don't need to hang the new joists under the old ones, you can stagger them in-between. But really the answer is to ue acoustic hangers as other have suggested. You just want the structure to be decouple from the roof structure and acoustic hanger achieve that perfectly adequately. If you...

Who knows what this Vise (Vice on your side of the pond) is for?

I don't think it's bike wheel related, you would expect the vice bit to accommodate an axle not be flat jawed. Also there are loads of bike wheel diameters so a fixed length is pretty unuseful in any kind of bike workshop. And there would also need to be a fair bit of height difference to each...

    Record 044 without cutter clamp

I made one from those drawings a few years ago. It wasn't actually that easy to mate them together. It locks it down fine but it's a bit of a fiddle getting it to clamp on narrow blades, it tends to want to walk out as you tighten the screw. As per usual never got round to finishing it and...

Another mystery tool, maybe not so mysterious!

It's not a boot hook. The hook is clearly wrong, it needs a flat bottom to pull the leather tab evenly, that thing would trash the tab is no time. It's not a manhole lifter because A. They're bloody heavy, and have huge whole hand handles. B. They lock rigidly or you would forever be dropping...

    Help with Stanley Plough Plane

It's really hard to tell from the photoo. But are you starting at the end closest to you? As you are knew forgive me if you know this but you start at the end furthest away and work backwards as you achieved the desired depth. The I THINK you are doing it means the plane is trying to take on...

auto centre punch, how long do the pins last?

Mine lasted about 10seconds, dropped it as I took it out the packet and it punched the concrete floor and made a nice little mushroom on the pin.

    Britool No 10

So have you tried drilling something? Loosen off that adjustment knob all the way to start with.

    Britool No 10

I remembered now. When the bit hits the item to be drilled and can't drop the flywheel climbs down the thread taking the pressure off the drill bit which then drops again, but smoothly, it doesn't lift and drop just puts the pressure on and off. I would also disagree about needing to use it...

    Britool No 10

An alternative view is that it's actually quite clever, the quill descends fast until it meets resistance then the rotation is transferred to the flywheel or something and magic happens in some way that just enough downward pressure is applied to work. I would need to dust my similar one off to...

    melting/removing contact adhesive glue

Lighter fluid (naptha) is my go to remover of sticky stuff. Acetone also works but with MDF the moisture is more of a problem. And a pack of playing cards are phenomenal non destructive scrapers. Obviously they don't last long but while they are good you can work backwards and forward with a...

    Wolf Drill chuck removal

That sounds consistent with a Jacobs taper. The chuck has a hole all the way through the whole is tapered to accept a Jacobs taper. If you Google chuck Arbor you will see what I mean but I doubt it has the second taper to fit the machine (such as a morse taper) I think it sounds like I know...

Unusual hand plane. What is it for?

It's so you can have one iron POLISHED to perfection perfection with a really tight mouth and the other attacked with bit of rough concrete for 30seconds with the *ahem* chip breaker set really close so you can leave the mouth wide open. This ensuring impossibility of not achieving exactly the...

Another ID thread (not a pizza cutter)

I agree it's something leathery however the edge is sharp even in it pitted condition I reckon of I leaned on it a bit the teeth would make a row of little incisions.
