    Wood mallet

I made this one (actually, I made a few in different sizes!) Made from scraps - oak and an unidentified heavy dense wood... I weighted it with molten lead (used solder from my stained glass projects) which give it a nice solid weight.

Rail and Stile router bit - combo or matched pair?

and this nicely answer my last question about stock thickness :) Given that I am using mainly reclaimed wood, I guess separates is the way to go!

Rail and Stile router bit - combo or matched pair?

So, the matched pair will give me more flexibility on thickness ? To answer the question of wood choice - I have reclaimed oak (just under 20mm) which will be used for the doors. For the panels, probably will actually use ply - I suspect MDF would be more stable, but I’d expect that ply would...

Workshop layout - opinions / expertise

My workshop is an extension to my garage. Well, actually 2 extensions, the first section is brick, and then it has a half brick/half wood, slightly leaky, extension tacked on. The previous owner of the house parked 3 cars end to end, but I didn't want to have to shuffle cars, so I just kept...

Rail and Stile router bit - combo or matched pair?

I'm going to be making quite a few cupboard doors soon. Previously, I've made simple doors, mortice and tenon using rabbit and straight bits (very 'make it up as I go along' style!). For this project, I'm planning on using my new router table and some proper rail and stile bits (probably...

Workshop layout - opinions / expertise

Sorry, very late reply from me! My wife wishes there was 8 of me in the workshop - she always says she needs to clone me! Thanks to everyone for your input and help. Definitely good points about: Keeping main machinery at same heights and movable Concentrating on workflow (although I'm not...

Workshop layout - opinions / expertise

I think the scale should be just about correct. The benches against the walls are not very deep - around 600mm, and the main workbench is 1800x800. Most of the equipment is relatively small - the TS is a small Scheppach, the thicknesser is a (slightly rubbish) Titan from screwfix etc. The...

Workshop layout - opinions / expertise

It might look nice in the drawing, but I omitted the piles of wood offcuts, cardboard boxes, random tools that are in the wrong place, and the occasional radiator/sink/door/box of tiles etc that are waiting to be used in the house :giggle: The working height is a very valid point. At the...

Router table choice - trend / Rutland / DIY

Some very good points there - thanks! I like the idea of integrating the router with the saw extension. Especially with regards to dust extraction. But, on balance, your point 3 - time spent faffing about creating the workshop rather than working on the projects is the deciding factor! I...

Workshop layout - opinions / expertise

Hi All, Over the last couple of years, I have been gradually putting together my workshop. It's been a bit hit and miss, and its a work in progress, and changes around every so often The reason for this is that my primary time and effort is on our house renovation, so most workshop elements have...

Router table choice - trend / Rutland / DIY

The Kreg looks to be a good option, although seems out of stock everywhere. And I’m not quite sure my budget would stretch to it! It’s a very good point about cutters. I have a basic set of cutters, but will need some more specialist ones for the jobs ahead... interesting about adding it to the...

Router table choice - trend / Rutland / DIY

Thanks, I should have mentioned budget in my first post... Ideally I would prefer to not spend much above 300-400 on the table. (Renovating a house is an expensive job !) what benefit does the Kreg have over the trend or rutlands? Just the ease of fitting the router, or generally better...

Router table choice - trend / Rutland / DIY

Hi All, I’m new here :). I’ve lurked for a while though Can I ask for some expert opinions on router table choice? The background: I’m very much an amateur woodworker. I’m in the middle of a Victorian house restoration, and it is now time to start the kitchen / dining room. I will be making...
