Jointing reclaimed timber boards - best method?

Thanks all. Stupidly I never really thought of it that way. I mean biscuits always help line up the boards to keep the top flush, but always thought they were doing most the work, more so the glue I guess. Thanks all. 👍

Jointing reclaimed timber boards - best method?

Evening all. Quick question. I use reclaimed 9x2 joists, dry stored, plane them up on all sides to 220mm X 40mm or so and they make excellent table tops. I prefer using kiln dried oak, but some customers prefer reclaimed. I always biscuit joint and use spacers on my metalwork to aid any...

Any timber recommendations for outdoor/under cover timber seating?

Hi All I need to make some pallet wood style seating, but not keen on pallets as they're rough and not very clean looking as an overall finish. My plan is to use blocks and pressure treated and ideally eased edge timber planks, nailed together to mimic the pallet style. My client wants it a...

Stainless screws or nails/pins for Western red Cedar slats?

Hi all, got loads of slats to fix. Are screws piloted and stainless screws better or stainless pins ok? I've got 16 guage 38mm for 18mm slats. I guess splitting is an issue? 30mm in from ends. Thanks

Moisture Content Weather Red Cedar slats

Thanks all, much appreciated. Another question, is it advisable to use stainless screws or stainless pins/nails? I have tons of pins for the dewalt gun, but apparently it's best to use screws due to splitting? Thanks

Moisture Content Weather Red Cedar slats

Amazing, very helpful. I've cut all I need, so will keep the heated workshop to help dry out until staining on the weekend. Don't want to subject it to too much heat in case it splits. I was just going to apply two coats of osmo and then assemble the labels. Only half of one panel night get some...

Moisture Content Weather Red Cedar slats

Hi all, Haven't used WRC before, loads of other timber, not this. I know it's very durable, good against moisture and outdoor environment. However, just wanted to know the ideal mositure content for cedar slats. 45mmx18mm and they're light as a feather, but the mositure content reader says...

    What is this timber?

Doesn't have to be an exact match, it's more a best guess scenario really. I haven't been to site yet, but it's a trek away. I'll check with my timber supplier the price differences between the two. Thanks

    What is this timber?

Is this Iroko? Trying to match an existing porch fascia, I think it's Iroko. Thanks all

Best way to remove sap from knots on redwood timber?

Agreed, I put everything in my terms and conditions, so I'm covered. Just nice to save the grief in the first place. I will look at larch and douglas fir in future, but will push for sapele. I normally use Liberon decking oil or Osmo uv oil. I would always stain my own timber, especially...

Best way to remove sap from knots on redwood timber?

Interesting stuff all, thanks. Interesting about the non staining of hardwoods too. I have used a lot of sapele on my swing seats and outdoor benches, I always apply a couple of coats of clear oil to help further protect it from the elements. I know sapele is fine for being left outside to...

Best way to remove sap from knots on redwood timber?

Understood. I see what you mean, whenver I've bought from travis, majority of the time it's pine, but yes all timber differs with it's own qualities and different batches have different pros and cons. I wanted sapele, that's what I've got on mine, but would have been over a grand for the timber...

Best way to remove sap from knots on redwood timber?

Thanks for the message, Mike. In my eyes, the timber I have now should be more superior than the c24 I normally buy. I thought the C24 was pine , which is the cheaper yet stronger option out of the two. I only went with redwood as I thought it was a superior timber, both with pros and cons, but...

Best way to remove sap from knots on redwood timber?

Hi all, newbie here after some advice. I'm a welder by trade and work with wood, so I know wood is a nightmare to work with. However, I just wanted some advice on some timber. I am making some outdoor seating for a client, it's redwood, planed and routered. I know any softwood outside isn't...
