Series 2, land rover, soft top

@doctor Bob, just my tuppence worth as an owner of a handful of Series vehicles, including the current 1960 S2 and 1961 S2a: I love them. They make me smile, they make others smile, they attract lots of waves from other motorists and, provided you’re comfortable with their limitations, they are...

    Tormek corrosion inhibitor

It’s a T8 so yes, stainless spindle. I was more thinking about the tool being sharpened - probably over thinking it in fact... I would always dry the tool thoroughly and wax/oil it so perhaps no need for corrosion inhibitor?

    Tormek corrosion inhibitor

Hello all, I’m new to wet grinding and am interested to know if corrosion inhibitor is worthwhile with a standard stone and, if so, is it daft to consider using vehicle antifreeze (ethylene glycol) in lieu of the much more costly Tormek alternative? Many thanks.

Wanted Wadkin Bursgreen 10 AGS parts

Hello all, I am recommissioning a 10 AGS and am in need of the following: Original, 3-belt spindle pulley Cant/tilt angle scale and pointer (mounted on the casing above the rise/fall hand wheel - not the mitre gauge!). Many thanks. Andy

A bit more progress today. Delighted with the home-made riving knife carrier bolt, a big improvement on the original and it works like a charm. The loose-fitting pulley appears to have abraded the spindle landing a little as it’s been waggling around, the landing is coming in at ~15.6mm dia...

So with a little more late night research, it seems the spindle pulley thread is in fact 5/8” BSF, despite the rest of the machine being metric. I’ve ordered a decent die nut and taps and am crossing my fingers that I can recover it. I’ve also ordered a 3-groove pulley with new bushing; they...

Well, after a diversion to progress the refurbishment of my workshop and waiting for a couple of parts to arrive, I set about reinstalling the overhauled motor this evening. I’ve opted to re-use the original armoured cable from the contactor to the motor, in part because the motor terminal box...

    Wadkin bursgreen ags

Congrats on your purchase! I’m up in Aberdeenshire too and noticed that saw but was adamant that I wanted the original cast iron wing tables... One scam, an expensive life lesson and a load of hassle later(!), I have a tidy AGS from a private owner in Worcester. The “recommissioning” is...

Thanks Vann. I’ve ordered a metre of SY cable and will see what that plus glands look like when offered up to the contactor and motor terminal box. If they fit and don’t look too bad, I’m hopeful the rubber shrouds will keep out much of the dust. Agree, in hindsight SWA would be too inflexible...

A little more progress today. New Dunlop Z22 belts have arrived and I opened up the contactor. Some pretty shoddy electrical practices unearthed (no pun intended!), no gland on the power supply cable, frayed ends aplenty and corrosion on a couple of the cores. I’m making up a new supply cable...

(Yet!) another Wadkin 10AGS restoration thread

A couple of minor setbacks today: The motor drive end bearing is fine but the non-drive end bearing is rough. Both will be replaced with -2RS sealed variants but the outer race of the non-drive end bearing is too slack in the bearing housing, it’s rotating... I’m going to try Loctite first, if...

Motor removed today in preparation for bearing replacement. Considering the terminal box has a gasket and the capacitor housing has a close-fitting lid, this was impressive!

A little more progress today. Hand wheels both cleaned up, paint work lightly rubbed down in preparation for T-cut and motor removed. Curiously, the fan is slightly warped and is contacting the cowl. It looks like it’s seen some heat at some point and is discoloured. I was hoping that might...

Work bench build advice - Oak Slabs

I was lucky enough to snag one of the last benches Richard Maguire built, at a time when we were up to our necks in a house build project and I was working off a Black Decker Workmate. I specified a 90mm top vs. 75mm std if memory serves, it’s solid ash with a twin wooden screw vice and a tail...

Some may cry “heresy!”, but have you considered simply cutting down the rails you have?

Interesting observation Fitz, thanks. Yup, Clarke blade will be retired pronto. Planning to get dedicated ripping and cross-cutting blades and yes, I may get a 300mm blade for occasional use - good call.

And a couple more pics this morning: Repurposed Land Rover Series 2/3 footwell(?!) factory-fit dust chute. Slot in the riving knife mount I found packed with dust and limiting blade travel. Two groove spindle pulley. General condition after removing 9 dustpans of dust - not sure much use was...

Does any of you learned types happen to know the correct part number for the belts? What came off look like Fenner Classic Z600 (very faint markings) which Eriks list on their website, but is that correct? Having cut one, it measures 610mm and that seems about right, e.g. they were tensioned in...

The manual is a little ambiguous regarding belts. In the tensioning narrative and parts list it references three belts but all sketches of the spindle show a two belt pulley. I can only assume that the design changed from two to three somewhere down the line?
