New product for drilling straight holes.

If you have a drill press but can't take it to the work, just drill a hole straight through a thickish lump of scrap wood and use that as a drill guide. You could even do angled holes like this

    Tips for dowel making jig?

Most dowel-making jigs are like a sledgehammer to crack a walnut IMO. All you need is a piece of metal plate (or big square washer). See here for details: How to make Small Dowelling In the article I'm making small dowelling. But it can be used easily for 10mm. I didn't invent it. Some vids on...

    Astronomy and Cosmology.

In terms of trying to imagine the scale of things (or at least realising that we're just not in a position to), I use this thought process: Imagine travelling at 100mph most people have experienced something close to this in their car Imagine travelling at 1000 mph most people have been in a...

I've been in love with Dolly Parton my whole life.

Haha!! Absolutely brilliant! And a great taste in music! More my style than DP. +1 for Chrissie Hind.

    This price is OTT

Nice job pcb1962! I'm interested in doing this now. Do you recall the diameter of the braided sleeve you used. I have only been able to find it up to 30mm. I'm not sure if that would be enough for the hose from my (excellent) Festool shop vac. (No I'm not a Festool fan boy, but their stuff is...

    Recommend good one handed clamps

Depends if you need one-handed adjustment as well. If you find yourself reclamping multiple bits of wood of the same size to the bench or whatever, then there is nothing quicker than the 'mole-grip' type of clamp. I find these excellent. I still use f-clamps, etc for glue-up, etc

    Plug cutters

Plugs are not the same as dowels. The grain direction of a plug aligns with that of the wood with the hole in it. That makes it almost invisible, but more crucially means it will not rise above (or sink below) the surface of the surrounding wood, as an exposed dowel is almost certain to do...

Wood Filler Stain - Birch Ply

In the case of brad holes, I have since successfully used a masking tape technique described here:

Wood Filler Stain - Birch Ply

I have had exactly the same issue. It seems to be that the filler seeps deep into the wood, so even after extensive sanding, it is still there around the outside of the filled 'hole', and effects the subsequent staining process. I used Everbuild filler as mentioned above. I have filled and...

Lack of Woodworking programs on TV

The 'demand' for racism should be zero, surely, so any 'supply' is too much. He said 88 was the year his father died - but his father is still alive! This is way off subject, I realise.

Lack of Woodworking programs on TV

With literally hundreds of quality channels on YouTube dedicated to all aspects of our hobby, the simple answer is NO, I'm not in the least bit frustrated. How much more could you possibly want? Back in the day we had to be content with a handful of mail order VHS videos at around a tenner...

Does cheap dust extraction hose exist?

+1 for underground drainage pipe. 6 m for less than £20 You can also get sweeping bends called rest bends for smooth airflow. This is what I have used in my workshop. It works brilliantly. And 100mm flexible hose at £45 for 6 m from the ventilation centre . Hooked up with (toilet) pan...

    Pergola Project

Excellent job, and good write-up. Enjoy the view! "Third laps" are bridle joints, I think.

    Band saw cutting issues

I also bought a Record Power BS350 Sabre bandsaw a couple of years ago. Thought I was getting a good deal with a couple of free blades thrown in the price. The larger one ¾" was completely useless. I mean it's probably the worst blade I've ever used. Massive vibration, completely out of true...

    Condensation....I never knew you

When I bought my Record Power Bandsaw, the rep from Record said to cover it with a blanket. I'm now intending to do something like that. I have a large workshop that is difficult to dehumidify. In your experience/knowledge what would you guys recommend from: Cotton dustsheet Cotton dustsheet...

    Sketchup drawing and finished project

I use it all the time. Rather unorthodox interface, so a bit of a learning curve. Lots of good tutorials on YouTube

I went for the 'wheelbarrow' approach mentioned above . Details here: Kity 419 Tablesaw – Further Mods
