For Sale Elu flip over saw

I have a vintage Elu flip over saw for sale. This can be configured to be either a mitre saw or a bench saw. I have it set as a mitre saw. I am selling it because a) I need more room in my workshop, and b) I no longer have the hand strength to squeeze the start on the mitre saw! Don’t laugh. I...

    Realigning blanks

Hi guys I mostly turn bowls, so spindle turning is not a forte of mine. I was asked recently to turn a goblet, and made pretty good progress with it, until I got a bit of a catch. This had the effect of making the blank wobble slightly. I tried to correct this by just tapping the blank, but this...

    Platter error

Hi Guys, I need some advice. I’ve just turned a platter from Padauk. I had a bit of a problem with it due to its wild grain. Anyway, I got it something like, sanded it to 400, and then made my mistake. I omitted to apply sanding sealer (don’t ask me why, i’ve no idea) before I used True Grit on...

    Signing work

Hi Guys, What’s the best (easiest, most economic) way of signing your work ? i’ve tried stickers (they fall off), Sharpie type pens ( they bleed), pyrography ( not too good for small pieces), and getting bespoke metal discs made is expensive, and are not much use on spindle work. Any ideas? D.

    Problems?

I have been given a section of Monkey Puzzle tree trunk. It is very dry. I have never turned this wood before, but some turner friends tell me that it is difficult stuff to turn, particularly in respect to the heartwood. Any advice, please.

    Parting tool

Hi Guys, I have been given a fluted parting tool (Ashley lies). I’ve only ever used standard bladed parting tools, so I’m a bit worried about using this new one. Presumably it’s used with the flute down, so I wonder if there’s any danger of marking/ dinging tool rests. Any advice? (Don’t laugh) D

Axminster M33x 3.5 Woodturning woodscrew chuck

Hi Guys, Sometime ago I bought an Axminster woodscrew chuck. I have only used it occasionally, generally preferring faceplates. I used it today to mount a bowl blank. As well as the the centre screw, I also used 4 short screws to secure the blank. Having turned the outside of the bowl, I came...

    Spalted wood

Hi Guys, I been given some badly spalted (beech?). It’s very punky. I’m a bit unsure whether to use it. I have turned spalted stuff before, but not as punky as this stuff. I note that Richard Raffan says that he will never turn spalted wood because he doesn’t want a fungal infection. Has anyone...

    Power sanding

Hi Guys, When power sanding (using either a drill or inertia sander) , what is the optimum size of sanding disc to use? I have used the standard 50mm, but it seems to leave marks around the inside of bowls. Should I use a bigger disc? Or is there anything els I should be doing? D.

    Sale cancelled

Hi Guys, I need some technical advice about UK Workshop functions. Yesterday I posted two machines for sale. Without going into detail, I have been persuaded to keep them. I tried to put ‘Withdrawn’ on the original post, but it didn’t come up. I then tried to delete the posting, but that...

    Use of lacewood

Hi Guys, I have been given some lacewood bowl blanks. I’ve never turned this wood before, so I looked it up on the Wood Data base to see what its working properties are. For example, it is said to blunt tools easily. There were, however, quite a number of users who reported some allergic...

    Spindle gouge use

I have been watching some of the recent Richard Raffan videos. He is clearly still a master woodturner who makes everything look easy. One of the things he does is to rough out and shape the outside of bowls using just a spindle gouge. It looks easy, but I have always been taught that spindle...

    Grinding distances

Hi Guys I’ve acquired a OneWay type sharpening system , with the ‘swinging’ gouge clamp thingummy. Can any explain how I calculate the distance the pivot slide needs to be out for different bevel angles? Mike Waldt recently put a video on YouTube where he showed the use of bits of wood to set...

    Camera problem

Hi Guys, I have a Canon IXUS 900Ti digital camera. Just recently the pictures I take have started to be out of focus, but not all the time. The occasional shot is fine. The image on the back screen prior to shooting is also blurred most of the time but not always. I’ve adjusted the focus on the...
