    Is this African Blackwood?

Thanks Pete, I don’t think I’ll get a definitive answer either, but at least I know a bit more. It does look like it was used as dunnage for other wood and that makes good sense as the timber merchant must have just thrown it out. Thanks, Dirk

    Is this African Blackwood?

It definitely sinks in water, the log is 11kg, and the volume is just under 10 litres, so much heavier than water.

    Is this African Blackwood?

I cannot say that there is a strong smell coming from the wood or the shavings at all. The pictures I took do show the wood lighter than it actually is, but having said that, the wood is not black, but has black streaks in it, it’s more very dark brown, with hints of purple. Having looked at the...

    Is this African Blackwood?

Took another few pictures, the first one after sanding, the others after planing. I thought it was wenge, but it’s too heavy for that, so It’s still a mystery for me. The size of the log is about 100x100x1000mm anyone any other ideas? Thanks, Dirk

    Is this African Blackwood?

Thanks for your replies, guys. I think it must be wenge, as other pics of wenge wood are very very similar, especially the end grain ones. Help was much appreciated. Dirk

    Is this African Blackwood?

Hi there, I am wondering if someone can help me identify this piece of wood. I visited my local hardwood store, and they had this log in their skip, which they were going to scrap. I took this home, not knowing what type of wood it was, but I think it may be African Blackwood. the wood is very...

    Wood bending question

Thanks for all your suggestions, I had already planned to put two wedges at the bottom, and now I will simply make the front one thicker, so the chair tilts a bit further back. As for 'Peter Harrisons' suggestion, this is my first bending project, and I have put many many hours into this, so...

    Wood bending question

All, Many thanks for the quick replies. I may try the heat gun approach, as that seems to interfere least with the glue. The main issue I have is that each individual plank is not laminated but solid oak (about 12mm thick) and they are glued together on the thin side so with nine of them I have...

    Wood bending question

I have been building a chair of bent oak, glued 9 planks together to create the shape of the chair (similar to the IKEA chairs with the s shape) After testing it, I found that the curve of the wood is not quite enough and I’d like to bend the oak a little bit further. However since all the...
