Cutting Joinery Bench Legs To Length On Table saw

My chop-saw is broken and alas I have no table-saw, so today I've just cut the legs for my new bench by hand. Knife wall all round and progressive diagonal cuts round 3 faces to complete each one. They've come out nicely flush and perfectly square to the sides - which is somewhat unusual for...

    Flush vice or not?

After looking at many used old Record and similar vices online (and frowning at the shipping costs), I decided to buy new rather than risk getting something that might have 'historic' problems. I'm a woodworker after all and although a bit of metalwork isn't beyond me I prefer not to get greasy...

    How To Edge Joint

Fantastic post Custard. Thanks for the effort you've taken to make such a clear and informative tutorial. The clamps I use are pretty poor quality so the D-shaped blocks trick is something I've used quite a bit. I usually make these by splitting 1" thick dowel rod in half with the band saw...

    Flush vice or not?

I'm not ready to declare my position on the pins vs tails first question yet. It's a big thing when one is trying to fit into a new community and I'm not yet ready to alienate a proportion of people

    Flush vice or not?

Thank you all so much for the ideas and experiences! I think I've made a few decisions... 1. Definitely a flush vice mount. As was pointed out, this can be converted to non-flush with a simple spacer (but the opposite can't be converted). A replaceable liner seems perfect and I like the idea...

    Flush vice or not?

Big fan of Paul Sellers who has taught me an AWFUL lot! I started with the idea of following his well known bench series but realised I could really use a knock-down bench. As for his non-flush vice, I seem to recall him giving his reasons for it at some point, but I can't recall what they were.

    Flush vice or not?

My thoughts exactly. The vintage record vices (52 1/2 and 53) seem to be the 'gold standard', but they're somewhat hard to come by these days.

    Flush vice or not?

Thanks for the input Steve. I'm already starting to watch your workbench build series and part one has also answered my second question! Looking forward to seeing your process and the end result. Due to limitations in my garage I'm considering a knock-down construction but still need...

    Flush vice or not?

So I'm about to start building a new workbench and trying to decide on a few details (code for "there may be more calls for opinions/advice coming). I'm looking at face vices and favouring a record (52/53) or a modern equivalent depending on what's available in the used market. I'm pondering...

    Bowed Bellied Chisels

In my experience it's far too common to spend way too long worrying about flattening chisel backs. Most come from the factory with a concave grind on the back to allow quicker flattening of the areas that matter (i.e. the tip and sides along the length) to give 3 reference points. That said a...

    Combination Square Advice Please

As some have already mentioned, combination squares can be adjusted with little more than a needle file and some patience. I've linked a video below from John Heisz which gives a method I like which avoids the need even for a file. one thing I do differently from his method is I don't use a...
