    Building my own workshop

I just finished my shed/garage, best thing I've ever done. I would advise you to do as much of it yourself as you can, then you'll know every block, pipe and wire. You'll save a fortune and the self satisfaction is priceless. Good luck.

Thanks for your advice, knowledge and a little trip down memory lane.

Thanks. You're right, I should pay for the right oil, it's cheaper than a gearbox.

    20/50 oil & 140 grade oil

Thanks for getting to me so quickly. The 20/50 oil is very thick, for old engines that don't get very hot. The Seagull people say not to use grease as this will stick to the case and not the gears, therefore leaving the gears full of water.

    20/50 oil & 140 grade oil

I have an old 1976 Seagull outboard engine which needs 140 grade gearbox oil. The gearbox gets filled with a little water, emulsifies and goes to sludge, which is fine, that's just how they all work. Every 10 hrs of use, you top it up and it runs lovely. 140 grade gearbox oil is £15/litre, I...

    Record vice slipping.

Thanks to everyone for all your help. I turned the cage the right way up as it was in the video and pictures you all sent me. It took less than 5 minutes. I got some big coach bolts washers and nylon nuts, bolted it down good and tight. It works brilliant and I can't see me ever having a problem...

    Record vice slipping.

Spot on. The cage goes into the body of the vice, mine is protruding. I'll turn it the other way up, that seems to be the answer, I feel a bit of a nugget putting it in upside down, but after getting all this help, I'm a happy nugget. Many thanks,Paul.

No, it wasn't working right to start with. Thanks.

    Record vice slipping.

I recently bought a Record 84 metalwork vice, took it apart, cleaned it up and put it back together. The little lever that you push, which allows the outer jaw to slide back and forth, slips and spins. With the vice upside down I can see the piece (of metal of similar size and shape to a ruler)...

Good advice that I wasn't quite expecting

Use it or lose it. Strengthen the muscles in your back that keep the vertebrae in place.
