Where did that wiring diagram come from? Is it definitely the correct one?
What you're finding seems odd doesn't fit the drawing.
Personally I'd do some point to point continuity testing with the machine dead, to establish that the drawing is correct.
This is the safest and least intrusive...
They are 2W LED filaments and don't kick out much heat at all. I think we'll only be putting artifical plants up there to avoid watering near the electrics. The frame and lamp holder are both solidly earthed.

As the isolator Rortin posted is four pole, couldn't you use it to isolate the live and neutral on both legs of the ring coming out of the consumer unit?
