    What Oil stone to get?

Can't beat an old washita. My sharpening routine- grind with a grinder, hit it with washita, than a quick strop on leather with green compund. Done. Hair popping sharpness I think you could even skip the strop and go to work straight from washita. They are a bit more expensive than india stones...

Yet another english style workbench build

The idea is that since the bench will need planing down, the nails are well visible from the top. So less chance of surprises as would be in case if the top would be fixed from the bottom. If you need to plane the top, just check if the nails are set well below the surface and you are good to go.

    Wood Identification Required

'Scented' and 'splinters' also could be Larch. I have some Siberian Larch that looks very much like this. It's also very hard, about as hard as Oak.

"Off the shelf" vs DIY workbenches

Make your own, it's much more satisfying, not to mention you can make it much more sturdy than most commercial offerings. I made my first roubo style bench, with 6in thick top in apartment's spare bedroom, from wet lumber, with only two handplanes and a saw. It worked well for many years. No...

Workshop floor - how much weight can it take?

Here's a sort of test by fire. I just received and unloaded 3.2 m3 of tongue and groove cladding for the walls and ceiling. stacked in the workshop on 3 battens 1 m apart. It should be about 1400 kg total, so 400kg+ on each batten. Checking with a long straightedge there is no sag. I guess the...

    Workbench build

Spent some time over the last week building a workbench. It's based on Maguire's english workbench, but everything is oversized to suit the material at hand - 80*200 pine. I also added a slit for a notched batten, to use as a planing stop. So far one mistake I'm worried about is not leaving an...

Workshop floor - how much weight can it take?

I found some calculators that show this floor to support 400kg/m2 with a safety factor of 2. With a point load of 400kg giving 6mm deflection. Also information about heavy aquariums and safes seem to point out that this sort of typical floor can take up to 400-450kg objects if placed near the...

Workshop floor - how much weight can it take?

Doesn't sound good... What was the span and spacing on your joists? Still, I hope placing directly over concrete posts might help.

Workshop floor - how much weight can it take?

I'm setting up a workshop in a timber framed building. It's about 6x12m large. The foundation is concrete posts in 3x3m grid spacing, tied together with 150x200 composite timber beams. On top of that are 50x200 floor joists, at 500mm spacing. Finally comes 21mm plywood for the floor. Joists and...
