    Cladding suppliers?

Surprised you don't have a suitable one down there. I can drop into Cladco up here is Glasgow and get any stuff. Some Roofing supply places and builders merchants have basic stuff.

    Inca planer/thicknesser

Yes Thank you. I did look at Simply Bearings for the belts. Knocking up a cover in metal is on the cards........tinbashing or welding even. A grp one would be easy if I can borrow a cover.

Would like to know if it is the round rubber belt that hold the worm drive in tension against the plastic gear to drive it. Worm drive seems to stray from vertical in coming up against gear one. I don't know that it will work like that. The side cover may have locating points to hold the...

    Inca planer/thicknesser

I have this wee machine as a project. Bits missing: Fence, side cover and probably more. I paid £60 and non runner with filth and rust. Cleaned up and put new capacitor in. Runs good. Plastic feed gears are good. Anybody got one a 493 like this? Need belt round belt dia and can get the...

Workshop build, wood frame on concrete foundation

If it was a wet cast, your mix has been rather thick. If you hit onto the background coat then that has been a bit soft. Aris around doors and windows are ragged. You use the aris stick on inside and out to give a nice aris. I wish you had asked for a wee bit more advice. Could you give...

    Resawing - Japanese saw options

I recently ripped through the centre of 14ft x 7" x 1 1/4" Kiln dried Euro Oak. After starting with a few saws including both sharpened disston and japanese, I found the Bahco 244 was best. About £7 each. Buy two and your quid is in. Nothing but hard work of course and no saw will give you...

Ladders against gutters... And what to do when getting onto a roof ladder?

Anchor points normally go into the ridge. That timber is generally like a 5x2 lying on it's side. You are basically screwing into the 2" face of it. Permanent anchors are through bolted there or fixed with heavy and deep coach bolts. They can be left in with a dressing of lead or mastic, as the...

Ladders against gutters... And what to do when getting onto a roof ladder?

Slater all my life. Ladders up against gutter is simple. Go up main ladder to just underneath gutter level. Drop a tight fitting bit of 4x2 2ft in length into gutter. The timber will lean against the bottom course of tile or slate. This will take weight of ladder and you without breaking...

My BIG ( for me ) project

As long as you get some done every day, you get progress. Lots of people think they are going to do wonders at weekends and it is just not enough for major rebuilds. This 16ft clinker was a full rebuild and took 2yrs about 6 days a week. I can only imagine the price of european larch, oak...

    Which silicon to use

It should be a low modulous silicone that you use. The low mod and high mod have different BS numbers.

    Self employment

I was self employed for 25 years in building and 20 years employed by big builders.. I love the advice given on this forum on these subjects. It is varied, interesting and well balanced. I have nothing to add. Like most things self employment is good, it is bad, it is an adventure. It is...

    How old is this roof?

You can't beat a roof with Sarking, counter batten then tile batten. I still prefer the Hessian reinforced tar felt as well. When doing a roof for yourself or customers, use the maximum head lap, not the minimum. Roof lap cover is like oil changes on an engine..............cheapest insurance...

And they think the beaches are packed out

In Scotland the holidays were called Fairs. Glasgow Fair was doon the watter to Rothesay or to the berrypicking at Blairgowrie. Later it was Blackpool. Paisley and Greenock Fair were before and after the Glasgow one which was second fortnight of July and rained constantly in general.
