    Record 25 vice casting repair

Hi Okeydokey, Thanks for prompting me to conclude what I had originaly asked for advice about. I took the vice to a professional welder/fabricator who said that there was not practical way to weld or braze the casting back up due to access and general issues with pre-heating an odd shaped...

    Record 25 vice casting repair

I had a look online and I think I have found a small copany that claims to be able to braze or weld anything - including castings. I think I'll visit them in the next week or so and get their opinion on it. As RichardG suggested - it might also be an idea to make a replacement part out of steel...

    Record 25 vice casting repair

Thank you for your advice - I hadn't really considered fabricating a replacement part but I think I'll have a go at making something and see how it looks.

    Record 25 vice casting repair

I recently picked an Irwin Record 25 vice out of a scrap bin at work. It was thrown there having “given out” whilst clamping a heavy casting that was having its bolts torqued to ~400Nm. Each time it slipped in the jaws, they gave the vice handle a hammering to tighten it further. As a result...

    New to me Wadkin LQ

That would make sense- that the LQ was essentially not big/flexible enough for the many foundries and was outdone by the overhead routers in terms of production speed in other applications. I guess its a bit of a jack of all trades machine.

    New to me Wadkin LQ

On that point, I spoke to a pattern maker recently - I was enquiring about casting a new table stop mechanism - he said they got rid of their LQs because they were only really used as a drill press. Everything else was done on the WX. He said the lq was limited in its capacity and that its head...

    New to me Wadkin LQ

That's a very smart restoration, Wallace. Is there any difference in functionality between the LP and the lq?

    New to me Wadkin LQ

That is helpful, thanks. They are asking for quite a lot for that machine. I'd be wary of any listing that didn't show the condition of the table.

    New to me Wadkin LQ

Thank you very much, Vann. The link to the woodworking forum is an interesting read. I have just registered there so I can look at the photos- I have a lot to learn about these machines and how to get the best out of them. In the near future I may have to post some photos of other stuff in the...

    New to me Wadkin LQ

Thanks for your response. The rotary table was the main reason for going for this machine as I thought I may never have the chance at one again. The LP that you restored looks like a nice machine. You can seen how the LQ evolved from it. The table stop mechanism's casting does look different...

    New to me Wadkin LQ

Thank you for suggesting them - I'll give both of them a ring and let you know if I have any luck. LNC machinery actually have the LQ's bigger brother advertised - the WX Pattern Miller. If only I had the space...

    New to me Wadkin LQ

Thank you! I have tried Daltons and I have tried Advanced Machinery. Both companies own different parts of the original Wadkin intellectual property. It appears that the recessing and boring machines were dropped completely before either company were formed- niether have anything other than a...

    Disc sander switch

It looks like a transformer - maybe its a contactor? I've never seen one that size but they are common in large machines. They create an electro-magnet when you first press the on switch. This holds the switch closed until you hit the off button. If that is what it is, a fualty one would cause...

    New to me Wadkin LQ

Hello. This is my very first post on this forum. If nothing else, I hope this is of interest to someone. I recently bought a Wadkin LQ. It came out of a pattern maker's workshop which had closed down. This machine seems to be almost complete with a full range of tooling and with the auxiliary...
