    Birch ply alternative?

I'm planning to make a painted bookcase, I was planning to use bb/bb birch ply but with the way prices are now in considering alternatives. Any thoughts on a wood or material that is at least as stiff and takes paint well? Maybe some other grade of ply or a cheap hardwood? Beech and poplar...

    Pure tree timber

Anyone used these? Based in Exeter. They have some nice looking oak both sides veneered birch ply but I can't see much about them online. Alternatively, anyone know a good place to get oak both sides 9mm ply?

    Getting Utile near Manchester

Anyone know of a supplier of Utile near Manchester? I've been through the sticky, but they're mostly miles away (the closest being Hymor in Stoke). I did try Trafford Timber who have it listed, but they have no stock for a month or two, so that's a bust.
