They're gorgeous 😍, I love birch, the spalting can be amazing, sometimes just subtle shades and others full on colour changes, I keep most of mine on the concrete floor of the workshop, it seems to colour up better that way than being on the shelving.

Couple more birch pieces today, a very small pot and a bowl coloured inside with red food colouring, not 100% happy with it but I'm sure someone will like it

What is the safest way to plank a small log?

@Agent_zed where in the southwest are you? If not too far from Aldershot/Farnborough you are more than welcome to come run in through my bandsaw

    Lets see your wood

End to end through the hearts, parallel to the ground in your 2nd pic, you'll get 2 shallow bowls, being a 3 way crotch you could get some gorgeous feathering in the grain. Similar to this eucalyptus but with 2 feather stripes- Or you could turn a single live edge bowl like the eucalyptus ⬆️...

    Lets see your wood

Definitely cherry and I'm shocked it hasn't split more than it has, I'd be tempted to split it through the centre, rough turn 2 bowls and seal with pva then store in their own shavings for a few months to finish drying.

    Lets see your wood

Just had a closer look and the cube of wood I initially assumed was Ash is actually oak, hoping I can square it up without losing too many of the small cracks then turn the centre away leaving the outside faces flat then put a light inside, if it works I think it will look stunning, especially...

    Something new

I have some boards being sent to me, cherry and walnut I think, may see if there's enough to make a drawer with those, in the meantime I'm going to glue up a blank and try my original idea on the lathe. I'm not saying I'll never try bandsaw boxes again, I've seen some that look amazing but for...

    Something new

I hate it. I forgot to allow for the kerf so now the drawer is too small for the calculator by 2mm, in my haste I forgot to sand the inside of the drawer before gluing it back together, the back panel of the drawer didn't glue on very well because the layer of ply didn't like being cut and tore...

    Lets see your wood

Saturday SWMBO arrived home from her volunteer work at the UK wolf trust near Reading (yes real wolves) with a boot full of wood, had she asked before loading it up I probably would have said no to it, I've so much waiting to be processed already and most of this new stuff was on a log pile and...

    Yandles offers on abrsive discs

They do this every now and then when they get stock that isn't selling so well 🙂 last year I picked up 4 boxes of the Mirka sheets for a fraction of what they usually sell for

Rotary tool... Dremel or something else?

I expect a simple round hole would work as well as a shaped hole and would be considerably quicker to do and achieve the same result.

That's stunning, love that inlay 😍 As an aside did you know that Hawthorn leaves are edible? They don't taste too bad either 😊

Rotary tool... Dremel or something else?

Perhaps a diagram of what you want to achieve would help? Also what size batteries are you using and why an oval hole?

    bandsaw tyres.

I have a 5ltr bottle of meths so will give that a go 🙂

Hopefully it will be a success but I'm not sure at the minute

    Something new

Back to the original subject 🤪 Yesterday I trimmed the ply block to size and removed the back panel then started cutting the top draw, seems the top radius was too tight for my blade so had to redesign for a single drawer, cut finish isn't great but I think I can work with it, pulled the drawer...

    bandsaw tyres.

I have the RSBS14 so will be watching this thread, my tires are in good condition (I think) but are gummed up a little from all the green wood I've cut over the last few months, what would you guys clean them with? I'm worried using meths or similar could damage them.

    Something new

Insurance isn't expensive, my years policy costs me less than £40 and that gives me £5m public liability and £10m personal indemnity cover, a friend of mine is also a turner and woodworker, he does a lot of stalls and has said that occasionally he loses money on the day, it's just the way it...
