    Old Stanley threaded knobs

    I guess they are for a 9 3/4 plane :(

    Old Stanley threaded knobs

Further research leads me to believe that these knobs are for the Stanley #9 3/4 and NOT the #45 :( I will post a photo of the base of the knobs tomorrow :)

    Old Stanley threaded knobs

Besides the #45, what planes in the Stanley range, used a threaded wooden knob? I have recently acquired three mint condition knobs and would love to know their history :)

    "SR&L" marking on Type 9 or 10 Stanley No3

I know that, but why was it placed there?

    "SR&L" marking on Type 9 or 10 Stanley No3

I recently purchased a damaged Stanley No3 Type 10 (1907-1909) mainly for the parts and to use as a test plane for japanning. After cleaning the bottom, I noticed that it had "SR&L" engraved on the heel beneath where the tote sits. I have never seen this marking before, nor reference to it on...

What Type is this Stanley #4?

Thanks Vann. You have confirmed for me what I thought from browsing rexmill :) The right-hand thread on the adjuster nut has really got me wondering. Still, once the blade has been sharpened, I think it will be a keeper.

What Type is this Stanley #4?

Hi Vann. No, only on the plane's bottom. The lever cap has like a pimple on the back. Weird, eh?

What Type is this Stanley #4?

My new $10 purchase arrived during the week, and after checking on rexmill.com I thought I had a Type 6 (1888-1892) After a quick cleanup, I became more confused with its lineage. For example, I noticed a stamp that I had never seen before on the iron cap and the letter "S" on the plane's...

    Union #2 vs Stanley #2

Too late :( They both went down the plug hole last night. The first batch was made June last year.

    Union #2 vs Stanley #2

I think you are right. My "concoctions" do not appear to be dissolving to an acceptable level. We have a product out here called Thinners which contains 30-60% Toluene, 10-30%Acetone, 1-10% Methyl Isobutyl ketone and 1-10% cyclohexane. Do you think that would work as a substitute for Turps...

    Union #2 vs Stanley #2

Both of my jars of paint have not "thickened" to my liking, but who knows, they both may be fine. I used a mix of asphaltum, mineral turpentine and boiled linseed oil. The real test will be when I get around to using them :) The small bench-top oven I referred to earlier, is located in my...

    Union #2 vs Stanley #2

I have 2 jars containing Japanning goo hatching in the hot water cupboard as we speak :) And I have thought of buying an old second-hand electric oven for use downstairs in my workshop for this very use :) My small electric bench-top oven is just too small for my bigger planes :(

    Union #2 vs Stanley #2

Both at this stage, although I may end up re-breaking it and gluing it again. Only time will tell :) I did attack it with a file, but I think I may have sourced a replacement iron set in the USA, so I have placed the Record iron back on the Union plane. Yep - at this stage anyway. My wife...

Width variations between UK/USA made Stanley 5 1/2

Thanks IWW :) I just tried to install an old "new" unused Stanley blade into both of my two "Made in USA" 5 ½ planes (Types 11 & 13) and it will NOT fit either :( However, there is ample side play when I install the same blade into my wider "Made in England" 5 ½ plane :)

    Union #2 vs Stanley #2

The brass adjuster nut is a 1" diameter, double rimmed variety - not sure if it is a Stanley or a Union, though. Guess I will file the iron down a hair :) A "user"? - sacré bleu!!

    Union #2 vs Stanley #2

Sorry to be such a pain in the proverbial. Since acquiring a Stanley # 2 earlier in the week, I have today, picked up a Union #2 from the same seller :) Although the Union had had a crack in the sole braised, I was really after it for parts. Unfortunately, the Record iron that accompanied...

Width variations between UK/USA made Stanley 5 1/2

You been talking to my wife?

Width variations between UK/USA made Stanley 5 1/2

Is it normal for there to be obvious width differences in the same model Stanley hand planes, made in the UK and USA? I was just cleaning my recently acquired USA made Type 13 #5 1/2 when I placed it next to my made in England plane of the same model. The width difference is 1/4" Do these...

    Stanley #2 ID

I resolved the issue of the misfitting frog screws. I swapped them over for the shorter screws that had been incorrectly installed on the #5 1/2 :)
