    Scrub plane

Hi, I've just bought a ECE wooden scrub plane. It works wonderfuly, and right out of the box. I haven't sharpened it, it's just ground from the factory. Plows through the wood as if it was butter. So there is my question.... Should I sharpen it, and to what extent??? Thanks for your advice. CW

    ECE Bow saw owners ?

Hi, I have two ece bowsaws (the 700 and 600 mm). I also have a 24" model I made myself . First of all, it doesn't need to be ece, any brand bowsaw will do. Then, by the model with a tenon blade (it’s a rip pattern, i’d say 7 teeth per inch?). I believe that a continental bowsaw is the most...

Thanks guys, Philly, you're right I'm sure it's strong enough. But I can't shake the impression that something ought to be different about that joint? Maybe I'm just trying to overbuild... CWR

    Blacker House Shoe Bench

Hi, I would like to build the bench showcased on this website : http://www.stickley.com/OurProducts_Det ... mit=SEARCH It looks real solid. The only thing that gets to me is the connection between the back and the armrest. It seems like the connection is made with some dowels or screws. Even...

Rip saw - ryoba or western ?

I use either a panel saw or a ECE bow saw with the blade 90 degree to the frame. Remember to hold the saw with two hands when ripping. One near the blade and the other ner the tensioner. Also it must cut perpendicular to the wood, not on a 45 degre like a distons and the likes. And finnaly if...

    Stop Chamfers

Hi, I would use a flat bottomed spokeshave. If they are very long maybe do the middle with a block plane skewed. Good luck CWR

Shoulder planes - Advice new vs seconhand

Good review Derek, I usually use my shoulder plane one handed and the piece held with my shooting board. I'll give the two handed technique a try. By the way, I forgot something. I use my Stanley 92 to plane down wide tenons, I hog a lot of material and it tends to clog up. You then need to...

Shoulder planes - Advice new vs seconhand

Hi, Don't skimp on a shoulder plane if you can... I have a Stanley 92, it does the job when tuned up nicely. The adjuster is good to gave. But boy this plane a lightweight and small, therefore it gives my hand cramps! It's the poor mans shoulder plane, but I never could turn myself around...

    Record 043 or 044

Hi, I'm looking for either one of these planes (to be used, not collected). Don't know about how to purchase one... Problem is I live in Montreal Canada. The good ones seem on your side of the pond. The new Lee Valley plough plane seems great, but it's not quite in my budget! By...

    Frame saws

It's a ECE Bow saw (some call it frame), the same type a Tage Frid or Frank Klauzs (sorry for the spelling). Andrew, I'll give a try at your technique. Had not thought about it that way! Do you use one or two hands to guide the saw? I suppose your holding the vertical fame not the turning...

    Frame saws

Hi, I have a frame saw (the german type). It's real good at riping big tenon cheeks. I'm trying to figure out how to rip a board with it. Usually I rotate the frame so it clears the path of the sawing. But, boy does it saw crooked and not square! Do you have any insiders??? I do have a...

how do you treat your plane?

I use C. My planes 4 to 7 are stored in a wooden shelf, which I don't mind marring. My reasoning is if I would prop them up on battens the casting would become convex. whish is very unlikely yo happed! Anyways, I've tried the other methods and it doesn't work for me. Have a good day

    Rip saw

Jesse, Right now I work with a Bacho Xt saw, the set is too wide. It makes a kerf almost 1/16". I can saw staight and square, this saw performs quite well. But I would sure like if I used less energy riping. Kind of like when I found out that putting wax on the sole of the plane makes them...

    Rip saw

Hi guys, I'm looking to buy a rip saw. I've had a look at the pax 5 point. It's breasted, tapered and seems nice overall. Except maybe for the handle which hurts my hand, i'll fix that with my trusty rasp. I'm wondering wheter i'll go with a 24" or a 26", ripping pine cherry and oak. And how...
