    Pioneer saw

I have a vintage hand saw marked 'Pioneer, Sheffield' (stamped on the blade) - anyone know if which maker used this, or is it the name-mark of a maker? - name is stamped, not etched, on blade - don't see it at first look through S Barley's reference book.

    Woodhead vices

In the right corner we have the two heavyweights from Bradford, born 1850, Woodheads 1 and 2, Lion weighing in at 65lbs and wheel at 70lbs. The young challengers, born 1910, are the Hampton tag team of Record 53 and Woden, each at under 40lbs, but maybe faster on their feet, we'll see.

    Pull-saws at lidl

I bought a couple of nice-looking and (tried them out) performing, japanese-style pull-saws from lidl - long blades - lovely long cord-wrapped wood handle - one edged 'crosscut-saw' is 18 tpi and the two-edged one 18 tpi on crosscut side, a progressive 10tpi to 7tpi on the rip-cut. looking...

    Anyone ID this hand tool?

dug up in my allotment in Sheffield - about 20ins long rusted steel bar with heavy lead/pewter knob on each end reminds me a bit of a foundry tool for tamping mould sand? hope it wasn't a Sheffield gang wars (1930s) knobkerry - (I found a couple of buried bayonets once in my garden, and word...

    wooden vice -- how used

This is for sale on auction site at present - I also have one and I have seen three pretty much exactly as this, and one or two close but not quite the same. I know that the flat bar with holes is to adjust for parallel action, but I have two questions -- 1. How is it designed to be...

    Drill sanding drum

My old (Oakey?) foam sanding drums that I chucked on a small electric drill are knackered, and even the repair of winding foam around no longer works. I know Black n D took over this product but the only place I can find it now is 'not available' from Amazon. I'm guessing discontinued? Why...

    "Collector" or what?

I don't think I'll be the only one, maybe just done it for longer than many - someone stole my toolbox about 50years ago - I was shocked at the price of new replacements but came across a box of tools for next to nothing at a fleamarket. And so it goes - many such boxes and fleamarkets later I'm...

Chisels - I could quit if I wanted.

It's just that my social worker said I should come to the meeting for support. I'm not a binge chiseller, it's just that I can't walk by a cheap good 'un in need of resto , and here in the Sheffield area, they're everywhere. I can quit, honest. It all came to a head when I stopped counting...

    Canada 50C/120F

Are you ready for this? Not the Mojave or Sahara, but Canada, and northern Siberia has the same temp at present. Get ready for extensive fires. No doubt global warming. Even the much-despised experts who warned us cannot believe how high it went. Caused by us. What to do? (yes I know it...

advice for wood selection for frame saw/bow saw

Thinking of making a couple of frame/bow saws - one shorter as a turning saw (10-12" blade) other as a continental-style frame saw for general workshop use so about 24" blade. I intend to use broken bandsaw blades as a starter blade (have a 3/16 and a 1/2 in respectively) I have some nice...

    why buy old vices??

could post here or workshop, but here goes -- Lockdown easing, sun's out so off on the long 5 mile treck to Chesterfield flea-market -- just leaving when I spotted these and got all 4 for £8 total. So why oh why do people spend good money on an old Parkinsons or Paramo when for a few...

    mystery tool - spud?

found this in the scrap metal pile at our allotment site - no-one claimed any knowledge - replaced rotten wood handle with similar (original also like a short T-handle spade handle but a bit thinner) - shaft and tang were very pitted blade somewhat and steeled or smithed front inch or so of...

challenge - using nitrous oxide litter

I'm sure you have seen those little NO2 bottles (usually silver/chrome about 60mm long 20mm diam) littering some darker corners of our world --- these are used as some kind of 'recreational' stimulant ('laughing gas' - med students used to misuse it) I have sawn a couple up for use as file...

SPACs and the south sea bubble

In the financial pages there is concern by some that UK (ie London) should not miss out on the big investments in SPACs (special acquisition companies), so popular in USA. I remember reading about the 'South Sea Bubble' of the 1700s - the height of folly was when investors poured money into a...

    This vice - what for?

I bought this vice on the bay a few years ago, it's a well made cast iron clamp-on, jaw width over 7ins, opens 2.5ins or so, not much depth. Seems to only usefully fit on corner of table/bench as shown - any other position obscures tommy bar or access in use. Typically, after buying I saw two...

    car exhaust??

well off topic but I think many here will have answer to my idle curiosity ----- I've seen car exhaust tailpipes dripping before, but today was following a fairly recent Merc diesel saloon round our ringroad and liquid was pouring from one tailpipe every time he accelerated even slightly ---...

    12V solar workshop power, anyone?

Many solar panels have a 12V output -- thinking of powering lighting, recharging battery packs and sound system in shed and greenhouse at end of small garden - any advice? I'm looking at one (or more) largeish 12V panel charging a lead-acid car battery and car-type lighter sockets as all are...
