Dumbing down work wear HSBC / BA

I’ve got mixed feeling about it. I work in the technology sector, and when I am in our head office, the norm these days is suits without ties for the men, while ladies’ attire hasn’t really changed over the last decade. A large amount of my work is done from home though, where I wear anything...

What are the most beautiful tools that you own

I came into a little inheritance money this year and so decided I’d buy something to remind me of my grandmother. I had this beauty made for me by Konrad Sauer in Canada. It’s absolutely astonishing.

    Hello from Solihull

The Jericho place is at the tip in Sutton. It’s recycled wood though. I’m in Acocks Green, so just down the road. Let me know if you need anything.

How is this curved dovetail joint made?

Totally possible, but the Leigh shanks are 8mm for strength. The pins at their narrowest here look about half that.

How is this curved dovetail joint made?

Don’t think so - the bit would have to be the shape of the pins, and that would be an absolutely tiny shank in this case. They’re also not really regular enough.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Are you building the industrial desk from his video series? I’m just finishing off one of those for my son - the base and drawer is all done, I’m just waiting for the finish to dry properly on the top before I put it together and let it loose. I tried a year or so ago with that ebony song...

I needed a cabinet to hide all the kids’ toys. Came up with an idea for the doors and went from there I picked something that I thought might be quite quick because if the repeatable actions, but they actually ended up taking me ages! I’m almost happy with the result, and the toys are gone.

Axminster Rider planes (Factory seconds) on sale

I had a low angle jack plane that was a factory second - it’s hopeless. The mouth isn’t ground straight and so it’s impossible to get a straight shaving. Everything ends up planed on one side only. I’m now trying to decide whether to go at it with a file to see if I can improve it, or just...

Advice on making a Tool Chest ala Anarchist Tool Chest - which wood?

Get yourself on the mailing lists of GJWisdom and John Pye. Those seem best from experience.

Advice on making a Tool Chest ala Anarchist Tool Chest - which wood?

Thank you. I was really pleased with them. I’m just sad I don’t have the space to make one for me and my workshop! That haul was £700 two years ago, but I had another one last month - £1200 for this lot (and more). It was a stack of teak, sapele and Japanese oak, with a few massive boards of...

Advice on making a Tool Chest ala Anarchist Tool Chest - which wood?

I keep my eye out for auctions of wood, sadly from joinery workshops that have closed for a multitude of reasons. That lead me to get a huge load of beech for very little money a couple of years ago. I used the beech to make two chests as to chests for my children, on the understanding that I...

    Recommendations for tuition

Thanks Sadly, I think Covid has cause him to close down. There’s been no movement on his website in a couple of years and a message at the top saying he’s not taking orders.

    Recommendations for tuition

That would be really amazing. I definitely get on better with seeing people working in person than reading alone… I’m near Solihull and there’s a bit of a gap around here for woodturning clubs. Nothing between Bromsgrove and Tamworth seemingly… When is the big move?

    Recommendations for tuition

Hey everyone. I was very lucky in lockdown to inherit the lathe, tools, and Sorby sharpening thing from a friend’s dad. The only problem is that I couldn’t also inherit his knowledge and skills, and so I’ve mad a hash of everything I have tried so far. Can anyone recommend a good place for...

Have just finished this sideboard to replace a horrid IKEA one that we’ve had for a decade, that didn’t work functionally or aesthetically. Pretty happy with how it has turned out, and I’ve just got another one with slightly different doors to go on the other side of the room to make now! Ash...
