Machinery transportation - Cheshire to Surrey

Just checking if anyone knows reliable man/van services who could collect some heavy-ish bits of machinery - one-off requirement - and transport from Cheshire to Surrey, ideally storing it for a couple of weeks in between but that's not essential. Probably 2 items about 200lbs each -...

    Out-of-true jaws on a vise I'm restoring

I *could* just leave it, but I restore old tools as much to learn about the materials and processes involved, as to get them back in use, so I don't mind putting a bit more effort in than is strictly justified. And it's the sort of error that's going to annoy me every time I look at it, now I...

    Out-of-true jaws on a vise I'm restoring

What is it with vises ? seems you can never have enough of them. I'm fixing up an old steel Woden bench vise at the moment and have found that the beds for the jaws are not at 90deg to the body of the vise itself ... here's the vise : ...and here's a top-down shot. You can see the misalignment...

    Collecting stuff from Auctions

I imagine some people here will have experience of buying stuff at auction - workshops and factories closing down, that sort of thing. I wondered how collection normally works for large items ? (I've only grabbed small things up to now). Is there usually flat level access to heavy stuff, do you...

    Sourcing some hex bar

Brilliant, thanks for the pointers everyone.

    Sourcing some hex bar

Where would people look to source relatively unusual hex steel bar ? I'm trying to help a friend locate some 7/32", so imperial, EN1A or similar, free-cutting. MetalSupermarkets only do 1/4" (and even then not as a stock item). I'm thinking as it's imperial then people supplying stuff for old...

Diesel shunting engine and Dean Smith & Grace 80-inch lathe for sale

Slightly tongue-in-cheek, and apparently I don't have enough posts to put this in the For-Sale section, but there's a upcoming auction selling off the assets of a railway preservation group in Wales, with some rolling stock and serious machinery. Thought people would like to take a look - go on...

    Advice on lathe purchase

You definitely got a good deal there. And from the look of it, there's a good deep-clean and bit of restoration needed. Don't rush that bit - you will learn loads about how lathes work doing the cleanup, so enjoy that stage. And post lots of pictures here please !

    Fixing up an old lathe

Ahhh... can't believe I didn't see that. Spent so much time agonising over "which colour" that I didn't notice the 'finish' option.

    Fixing up an old lathe

While I'm here, another question : what sort of paint do people like to put on machinery they're fixing up ? I have used Paragon Paints enamel in the past, which seems good quality and comes up to a very nice gloss, but I'm wondering if that isn't too shiny for some workshop machinery ? Lathes...

    Fixing up an old lathe

OK, a little more info (took a while) on the hydraulic drive. Here's it cleaned up a bit : It is indeed a variable-speed drive, where the input shaft runs a hydraulic pump which in turn drives a hydraulic output motor. The swash plate is on the pump (input-side) and can be angled using the...

    Fixing up an old lathe

If I thought a radius-turning attachment was interesting, I've now got to possibly the strangest thing to come with this lathe : a variable speed hydrostatic transmission. Apparently the previous owner ran an engineering company and so presumably decided to be inventive with the drive system...

    Fixing up an old lathe

That is so helpful, thanks Dalboy and deema. I've almost finished the cleanup stage (for the motor), so will post some shinier pictures soon. Does anyone remember a craze for 'Aluminium Paint' ? I can remember when I was a kid ('60s/'70s) seeing this around and everything being painted in it...

    Fixing up an old lathe

OK - thanks all for the comments on the bearings : there is indeed some text around the outer race, like this : "FRANCE .. T21C .. SNR .. 6304" ...and it measures 15mm height : @deema said "if it’s an imperial measurement it’s an imperial bearing and you know you don’t need to worry about...

    Fixing up an old lathe

OK, several recommendations that I have a better look at that motor. So I did. I thought people might like to see the (initial) results. First, let's check the electrical side of things. Whatever type of engineer the previous owner may have been, it wasn't 'electrical' : Glad I didn't try just...

    Fixing up an old lathe

So I went and bought an old lathe. Something I have been meaning to do for a while, to satisfy the longing not so much for turning metal (although obviously that's in there somewhere) as for restoring some old iron and learning about it. I had originally thought of something like a Colchester...

Compressors - old or new ?

There - I did say it was a subject that provoked conversation. Many thanks for all the input. I've got no problem spending some time and money sorting a used compressor out - I would be buying it as much to learn about the things as actually using it - pumps, joints, connections, etc. So I...

Compressors - old or new ?

Compressors seem to be a topic that stimulates conversation on this forum, so here goes : I'm looking to buy one and have the obvious choice of new or used. I would like an old one - partly because I like taking things apart when I buy them, and partly because older ones seem better made. So...

Moving heavy stuff + a couple of pics

I am likely going to want to move a lathe shortly - from the Midlands to the SouthEast. Not a massively heavy one - probably 500-600lbs plus a bunch of accessories. Can anyone suggest a person or transport company who (a) is working currently and (b) would do this carefully, ie is used to...

    Brick, Beautiful, Damp, Chilly...

Appreciate the suggestions, everyone, thank you. Except the one about giving the whole place over to my wife for bikes - thanks so much for that one, talk about putting ideas into peoples' heads. I now need to do some resetting of her expectations. Yes I do have a leaky gutter. Amazing how you...
