Bench top planer - Buying Assistance

Haven't posted on here about this in a while but just to let people know who may be looking at this in 2051, but I picked up an old DeWalt DW50 P/T unit for £200 in good condition. New set of blades cost an extra £25. Haven't had a chance to use it yet but it's all looking good at the minute...

Bench top planer - Buying Assistance

It isn't but it's dawning on me that my criteria limits my choices significantly. There seem to be a fair amount of them on eBay too - some [relatively] local. Most look in good condition. All within budget. I'd rather pay £300 for something I'm going to use half of than £600. That said, I've...

Bench top planer - Buying Assistance

So... After a week of searching, I've stumbled across a few. None new, which is probably going to have to be where I make a compromise. That and the fact I'm really limiting my choices by not opting to have a P/T unit. Got my eyes on a relatively clean, near-30 year old Elektra Beckum HC260...

Rutlands Parallel Clamps (Bessey Clones - Thoughts?)

Appreciate this, chaps. Not sure if these are 'Dakota'. I am just putting two and two together with the 'DK' code. I was tempted by the price but I'm just not warming to them.

Rutlands Parallel Clamps (Bessey Clones - Thoughts?)

Uniklamps never did the same job as the REVOs, in my opinion. Good but... obviously not twice as good. Never came across the Jet clamps, Axminster Parallel clamps are just as expensive as the Besseys although cheaper in bulk (for 10 a piece) but these Rutlands ones are confusing the Hell out of...

Bench top planer - Buying Assistance

If I could find a PT260 for £500 that's basically the same as the Metabo HC260 albeit with a better fence, I'd be a relatively content person. The Record Power equivalent is around £800 new.

Bench top planer - Buying Assistance

I think what it is with the Titan, is that the people who bought it had nothing better to compare it with. It's why I never really trust reviews online. A lot of hobbyists and DIYers who are perfectly happy with whatever cheap and cheerful machine they get - I'm not but I won't go into the...

Bench top planer - Buying Assistance

Realistically, no but my point is it's 'that' much because it's essentially a tool that does two jobs - one of which I don't need it to do, so why pay for it? I'd love for somebody to say, "yeah the SIP is a great tool" but I just know from experience in buying cheap tools that they really...

Bench top planer - Buying Assistance

The thing is, the machine I'm after does actually exist. I'm just debating the questionable quality of the thing (Rutlands/SIP units, clones, variants). P/T exist as well, but I don't see the point in paying for a combo if I won't use half of it. A decent Axi unit or a Record Power PT260 will...

Rutlands Parallel Clamps (Bessey Clones - Thoughts?)

Not the green Dakota ones. These: https://www.rutlands.co.uk/sp+hand-tools-clamps-vices-f-parallel-clamps-parallel-jaw-clamps-800mm-pack-of-6-rutlands+dk7221pack6 I already have several of the KRE100s. You can never have too many clamps but within a budget, the Besseys (which I'd highly...

"Ancient"... Yep. Problem I have is that - look, I do wood. I know engineers and I know metallurgists and so on, but if you're looking at cheap second, third, fourth hand, "before the sun set on the Raj" units then you're likely to have to fork out on the damn things unless you know how to fix...

Bench top planer - Buying Assistance

I've just watched the videos by that guy, cheers. As soon as he flexed that fence on the Metabo, it reminded me of an old Makita MLT table saw I used to own and I just said, 'nah'. Looks like I'm going to have to keep an eye out for a used Axi unit. Rubbish that they don't just have new decent...

Bench top planer - Buying Assistance

Thanks Marcros. Problem I have with the PT260 is mainly the fact that I won't be using the feature on it that costs half of the asking price, so I'd rather pay for something I'm going to be using fully. If that makes sense? I've seen a Metabo HC260 (Record Power minus cast iron top) going for...

Bench top planer - Buying Assistance

Yup. Its my predicament. I've considered a used CT150 but I don't tend to see them when I want them and the money tends to wander elsewhere. I could certainly make room for one, too. I wouldn't get rid of the DH330 because the only replacement for it would be a PT260 variant, albeit with less...

Bench top planer - Buying Assistance

I sold my power planer the other week. Didn't use it. Hand tools have been working the edges but for sake of speed, I'm after a bench jointer. Just can't seem to find one. I'd consider a floorbased one rather than one I can plonk on my bench but again, we're stepping into PT260 territory when I...

Bench top planer - Buying Assistance

I have the hand tools already (some Japanese Kanna planes too) but I was hoping to go down the machine route. Long story not safe for machinery. I was really hoping to avoid the SIP stuff and anything within a half decent budget looks knackered second, third, fourth hand. As I say, I don't need...

Bench top planer - Buying Assistance

Hi, First time poster, long time lurker. I'm in the market for a relatively compact bench top surface planer. I don't need one with a Thicknesser because I already have my trusty Metabo DH330 which I've been jigging with MDF and wedges to joint my thicker pieces of stock. Don't want something...
